There's no guarantee he signs here or even makes it to free agency but this isn't just some "oh this guy will sign with us because he grew up a fan of our team" kinda thing that most fan bases do.
It's not just the saving thing too. Chance to be closer to the family he missed out on. Chance to suite up for your Dad's favorite team and the team you grew up right across the river. Can help his Dad at the gym with the kids.

I never really understood the depth of the importance of Bobby Clarke to Bobby Ryan and certainly didn't appreciate what being a Flyer could mean for a guy like Ryan.

I really don't care either way since I don't view Ryan as a need for this team per se, but it definitely will be very telling if he doesn't sign an extension with the Sens next offseason.

That's fair value for a UFA with his point totals.

I would avoid posting something like that on the main boards considering the Flyers just gave an RFA an even bigger deal.

I don't feel like Giroux & Kessel are really a comparison outside of points scored. His last two years have been better I see that however. But he doesn't play the PK, right? He's a winger, so he's not elite on draws.

Lol, I couldn't care less what the average idiot on the main boards thinks. Also, I never said anything about value, all I am saying is with this and the Clarkson contract, they've got some long term commitments and seemingly have cap issues in the future.

$5M & $8M contracts won't look so bad in a couple of years.

Edit: though, Clarkson at $5M will always look bad.

Didn't you know? He took a paycut to play for Toronto!

An ESPN piece on Briere...

Quote:

"The one regret that I have is being a little bit too honest publicly in explaining my decision," Briere said. "But it was my way to show respect to the Canadiens organization to show how great they were in making every effort to sign me. But I was wrong, I shouldn't have said anything. You learn from that. But this time around, when the opportunity came again, this is the one place I wanted to be, it's the one place I wanted to play."

And that, despite the treatment he got here as a visiting Flyer, is the reason he wanted to sign in Montreal.

"Whatever happened with being booed here, that never took away from how I've always felt, the Montreal Canadiens were my childhood team, a place that I dreamed one day I'd have a chance to play in," he said.

Habs fan growing up? You better believe it.

"I grew up with the Nordiques-Canadiens rivalry and you were either a Blue or a Red -- I was a Red," said Briere with a chuckle.

Exactly my point, the Kessel $$$ I don't have an issue with, but I can't justify paying Clarkson 5m a year.

I'm biting my tongue until I see what kind of season(s) Clarkson has. If he puts up 25g-20a, then I wouldn't say it's all that bad, though I still don't think it's a good contract.

Really? I think for 5M/yr you need at least 60 pts.

lets put it this way, Couturier @ 18 in his first year of the league, playing 3rd/4th line minutes scored 27 pts.

I mean, I wouldn't want him on the Flyers at that price, but I get the feeling the Leafs would be pretty satisfied if he scored at least 25 goals.

I hope Hartnell can get close to 60 again. He makes almost $5m for another six years.

I don't really like the Clarkson deal but if he can score 20 goals a year while bringing a physical presence it becomes more tolerable from a Leafs fan perspective.

I think Briere is going to do the ceremonial flame thing for the Habs tonight... or he just starts it.

He just started it, the whole team has been passing it off to each other as they call their names.

Guy Lafleur passed it to Briere originally & then the rest of the team proceeded.

here's my non-Flyers prediction:

Price is going to have such a bad year that he's traded in the off-season

Also looks like the first goal that could possibly be attributed to the new pads, yes?

perhaps, but i think the chances are higher that it was just an unfortunate break for Price. He's looked really good so far besides that.

Definitely could make a case for it.

Former Darren Pang Calder Trophy lock, Lars Eller, ties it up.

I never thought I'd say this but I'm rooting for Mtl. I just can't stand the Leafs or their fan base.

I'm hoping the Habs newfound size & toughness can wear down the Leafs tonight for us.

Price just made a nice couple of saves in that series.
