Montreal Gazette: Souray says Habs should sign Markov first

Interesting article. Souray says that Gainey should sign Markov first. It kind of implies he will be gone next year...

He's just being realistic. I think he'll stay. Provided we have enough cash to keep Markov, Rivet and Souray. If we could only sign two, I would pick Souray and Markov. If you asked me which one of the three I would sign first? Andrei Markov.

Well that article doesn't exactly instill me with confidence. Sounds like Souray has already made his decision.

On Saturday Nick the greek Kypryoes said Souray will be in the 6.0-6.5 million ballpark, and will probably get offered that from a team out west.

I know it's Ol' Kyper, but if someone is retarded enough to offer him that much, then peace out Sheldon.

Sounds like a guy who understand perfectly the situation, knows that everything is possible in a cap world, understand he's not #1 priority (Markov) to the Habs, etc.

Its refreshing to read, he doesnt give any of the "I want to stay here all my career" BS...

I did not think what he said was all that bad nor was it untrue. Markov is the most important player to the Canadiens I was aware of this last year as Montreal struggled heavily without Markov in the line-up.
Souray also had a lot of positives to say about this organization, and I just feel he has the same mind set at Brodeur (his very close friend and business partner). Brodeur took less to stay with NJ so that the Devils could be competitive.

That being said...I can't say I disagree with Souray. Markov should be BG's #1 priority and I believe he will be signed before becoming an UFA.

Honestly, whats the point of having him here?

Might as well trade him and actually get something for him, sure he can help us in the playoffs, but he is not going to single handedly win us the cup. We could use him to get a good centre.

Scariest part of that article is knowing that Ninima is the highest paid blueliner...

Sounds like Souray is being pragmatic about his situation and the Habs priorities in signing Markov first. The quote above (from the article) doesn't seem to lend itself to the prevailing notion on the board that he's as good as gone.

Everything that has been said here so far is true:

1- Souray speaks the truth. Markov is the most important d-man of the Habs and Rivet will want to stay.

2- But saying that, definately means, for me that he'll be gone. If you want to stay, you could say those things but add that you did bring to the team some intangibles and having said that wished you could return as well....which he didn't.

So in the end, it will come to this, we're in a great race for the playoffs, we keep Souray and lose him for nothing. We're not in it, we trade him.

But having said, I'm really wondering what all 3 players could do if they really want to stay put. Would Rivet take less money if it helps keeping Sheldon? Would Markov do the same? Why wouldn't Souray do the same as well if he really intends staying?

Doesn't seem that way so far.....Besides, Rivet at 3.5 is nonsense for me.

P.S. You don't say things like "No matter what happens, I'll never forget this organization's class, for its belief in me and for sticking with me through some tough times last year." and come back.....This sounds like the last phrase you say AFTER you're traded or something like that....

Well, what if we can get something for Souray soon. There has got to be interest around the league. He is ripping it up right now. If we can get a good centre now, Im all for it.

wasnt there a story pre-season or sometime about him asking to be traded out west to be closer to his family or something?

or was that just hearsay?

Sure, but there was also the story of him staying in Montreal pratically all summer while his family was still down there. So we didn't know what he thought.

Now I think we know....
