Have to agree with the general consensus that Eager is better than Smyth.
Last night's game it was embarrassing to watch Ryan Smyth. Yah, i know Hall made some big mistakes in the game, but they were him trying to make forced plays through the neutral zone, and he was at least creating offence. Hall's poor plays are fixable.
Smyth on the other hand: 1) couldn't keep up to the play, 2) the puck died on his stick every time he touched it (giving it away on the cycle, getting stripped/missing passes in the neutral zone). These are not easiy fixable, just signs that the game has passed him by and that at maximum he should be a 3rd/4th liner playing 60 games with about 10minutes per game.
There must be a "veteran's quota" on Smyth's playing time, because there is no way to justify the amount of ice time he got last night.
Hope to see him in te press-box when we get our centermen back, because with Hall back at LW, there is no real spot for him in the lineup.
Hall-Perron-Joensuu-Gazdic sounds great to me.
Gazdic wouldn't have looked as out of place on Hall's wing last night as Smyth did.
Looks like the Oilers are serious about accruing cap space whereever possible in case they are in a position at the deadline by carrying as few healthy players in the pressbox as possible. Everyday that Eager, Jones or Larsen spends in the AHL allows about $25K/per player in additional salary cap space at the deadline.
I don't mind the strategy, especially when we have a couple days off like right now, but we gotta hope no one comes up lame on a game day, or rather that 2 fluky injuries on a practice day as OKC is simply too far to get someone here on very short notice. Makes me wonder if one of Grebs or RNH could go in a pinch.
It sure would be nice to have a farm team somewhere in the prairies then we'd basically never have to carry more than 1 healthy press box guy when playing at home.
I feel brown is a better player than eager. brown in my opinion is a lock to be our 11th forward.
I would of liked to see eager in a couple games.
smyth is brutual. I appreciate his heart his entire career. but he can not skate at this level anymore. especially with the league seems to get faster every year. players are younger and in better shape than ever before.
I really liked Eakins not worrying about contracts like coaches in the past at camp. Jesse Joanseu or whatever earned a spot and Eakins cut jones for him. other coaches would of kept jones because it was the path of least resistance. I really like Eakins. I feel hes slowly going to create a culture here. he definitely has players worrying about jobs. he has some hungry players in the minors. and for the vets down there. we will see what they are made of with a challenge in front of them. because this lineup is not set and it looks like with Eakins in charge it will never be set. what have you done for me lately type culture. bring your game, your work ethic and your heart to everyday or you will be gone. finally!
What aspect of play is Brown good at? Still not seeing it.
By not being a complete floater and actually buying into what the team is trying to do and filling a role for this club.
You really defending a player who hasn't been able to find a role on a terrible bottom 6 that has lacked toughness in the past 3 years? The guy should of been exactly what we needed but his play suggested the exact opposite.
