Third line center or top-4 LD to Washington

Oates seems determined to play Brooks Laich at eh 2LW spot, so both of these positions seem glaring needs for the Caps.

Who would be available that would be a fit for them?

Keep in mind that (at least) equal salary would have to move out as is coming in. Neuvirth, Erat, Erskine, and one of Brouwer or Ward, seem the most realistic sizable salaries that could be moved.

For those making suggestions on top 4 d-man, please note Oates' preference for where he plays right-handed d-man vs. left.

Once Klesla gets back (hopefully soon), I'd be open to Klesla+ for Erat with 750K salary retained.

Stars should have one of Daley, Goligoski, or Robidas available soon.

Most of the guys you listed other than maybe Erat or Brouwer aren't going to get you much.

Won't any of those trade just be opening up one roster hole to fill another?

Flames fans, what do you want for Giordano? I know there was a proposal this summer, but I assume he'll be harder to change now that he wears the C, correct?

That'd be so great if we didn't have such a weak defence already. Maybe after Emelin's return.

I would be all over the Brouwer-Gorges deal if I wasn't so skeptical about Fehr's ability to stay healthy... he's been good for half a season but I don't know if it'll last.

Impossible. Putting that C on means he will not be traded at least not for awhile.

I wouldn't trade Brouwer or Wilson for Daley straight up.

The OP is wrong, i think the obvious man out is Brooks Laich himself... I think packaged with Dmitry Orlov he can netch a decent return such as a Top 4 Dman.

Depending on where the Oilers are in near the trade deadline and how Marincen/Klefbom are doing, Smid could possibly be had for the right price.

Oilers would love Brouwer. Something around Smid and Brouwer?

That's 8 wingers who are 3rd liners or better, plus Wilson who really should be in 3rd line role if we don't want to **** up his development. We could lose two of those guys and still not have any holes on our roster. Erskine would in theory be traded in a deal for his replacement, so no problem there, and we have Grubauer in the minors who can take Neuvy's spot if need be.

For sure. A lot of us on the Caps board were praying Smid would make it to free agency this summer.

Erat's at the 4th line LW right now, and they're so loaded at RW that Fehr is being played at the 3C.

Thanks - that's definitely enough depth to be able to deal a winger for a top 4 d-man.

What did Orlov do to not even get a chance at the role? I thought he looked really solid a couple of years ago?

He did look really solid a few years ago. Last season he had a concussion and missed a lot of time, and when he did play in Hershey he didn't play well (by the accounts of those who saw him regularly). His preseason was nothing special, in fact it was pretty bad, and he was sent down to the AHL again.

The other problem with Orlov is he is left-handed but plays RD. Adam Oates is the most OCD coach I've ever seen about handedness being on the proper side, so he wants Orlov to switch to LD.

Orlov as a 2LD on this team isn't ideal either because he likes to move the puck in a similar role to Carlson who would be his partner. Orlov can certainly be a top 4 D given the right situation, I just don't think it'll be in DC. Adding a competent 2LD to the Caps allows Erskine to move to 3LD. Erskine is a perfect 3LD but too slow to be a competent 2LD, and Erskine and Carlson have zero chemistry.

Orlov + Laich/Brouwer would fetch a solid return, add a pick or prospect and they could solve their 2LD problem for years to come without creating any other holes on the roster. Of course this is all for not as GMGM will not pull the trigger.

Would something around Chris Kelly for Troy Brouwer work?

B's have Ryan Spooner knocking on the 3C door in Boston, and the Caps have a lot of RW depth. They have comparable cap hits. I would think Brouwer has more value than Kelly but I'd be curious to hear if people think that's a good starting point and what that + might be.

Meh. Doesn't do a lot for Washington. It makes sense to make Brouwer available for a 2LD, but a center would be harder to justify, especially for a strictly bottom six center like Kelly. If it was more of a 2/3C hybrid or a younger player with top six upside, maybe.

Any 3C additions would be on the cheaper end of things, if possible. Personally, I'd rather just move Laich to 3C if the Fehr experiment continues to produce poor defensive results.

If I was Washington I'd think about packaging Neurvith and a 2014 1st to Calgary for Mark Giodarno and Matt Stajan.
