Devin Setoguchi

Just trying to gauge his value in the eyes of the Jets org? What is he worth, how has he looked in preseason/recently? Saw that he's impending UFA, really just curious of what he's looking like, and how attached the Jets are to him? Jets fans fill me in?

I'm not going to propose anything dumb, just for reference, I'm a Pens fan.

Jets like him. Come back to us at the deadline. Zero chance he's moved before then.

Could you give a quick one or two sentence scouting report?

I don't imagine his game has changed much since he was with the Sharks - good shot, good speed, hits, lacking a bit of hockey IQ, prone to inconsistency.

North South player, good shot. Needs a good center to be productive.

Has really stepped up his physical game the last two years. Throws quite a few hits.

Would've loved for Maloney to have traded Klesla for him, and I'm sure the Wild would've liked Klesla on their blueline instead of a 2nd as a return for Seto. Similar term and money remaining on their contracts too. Ah, well.

Anyways, Seto is certainly on my wishlist of trade deadline targets for the Yotes. His speed, physicality, and shot combination should be a great asset to Phoenix if the Yotes are gearing up for a deep playoff run.

He's literally played one game for them...

If they're out of the playoff hunt by the trade deadline (and I don't expect they will be), I can't see how they'd get less than a 2nd for him if they decided to move him. Personally, I'd prefer they re-sign him.

At the deadline we could probably get a 1st for him tbh...if we so desired. but as you say, I think we'll be in the thick of it regardless.

the KSS line looks pretty potent.

Trade is unlikely unless we are headed for a bottom ten finish around the deadline. We paid a 2nd for him so they obviously like him as a player. His UFA status is a bit of a question mark for us though. Rumours/gossip I heard is he loves it in California and would probably prefer to play there all things equal.

That said, we have zero top six RW prospects in St. John's. If he meshes well with Kane and Scheifele this season there'd definitely be a multi year contract there for him.

Playoffs is a very important goal for us this year so unless we're looking out of it by February.. he's essentially on a "show me" deal for both him and the team.

I think the Jets are going to try hard to re-sign him (even if they have to overpay) considering what they gave up for him.

If he does test the market though, I think he's going straight back to California.

Sounds like he could be dynamite somewhere in our top six, but most people are saying they'd rather keep him, I'd assume that that is the general consensus among Jets nation if he's playing well.

Just to add:

-Much more of a goal-scorer than a playmaker

-Average to below average defensively

-Cannot break down a defenseman one-on-one. Needs a playmaking center to be successful.

-Known to be a partier instead of working hard on his game. However, there are no indications that he's a bad teammate or has any attitude problems on the ice.

He was a good player and was really fit well with Thornton when he was with SJ. He has potential to be a good top line winger but he's way too inconsistent and needs to stop partying and work on his game more.

Jets will do everything in their power to extend him. We have a severe lack of organizational depth at rw. If we are unable to extend him we would like a first at the deadline. Odds are we may have to add a later pick to get that.

He plays with Mark and Evander on the 2nd line, he plays as well as ever so far, we don't need him to be much better. Our 2nd line was very good after 1 game.

Seto is a grinder if that's what he has on his line. He's a decent complimentary player, but if he's the "best" player on his line you're not going to get much out of him. He's got plenty of energy and speed and he isn't afraid to hit, but he's supposed to be a scorer.

It's only one game, but he was throwing the body a lot in his first game for the Jets. That actually surprised me.

Looks to fit in well enough with Kane and Scheifele too - both of them can carry the play, Setoguchi just has to keep up (a luxury Kane has never had in a linemate, nevermind both). He looks like he's strong in the corners and of course has a wicked shot - I can't say he'll hit 30 again, but 25G and 25A wouldn't surprise me.

He has played one regular season game for them. Hardly fair to ask for an opinion on him off that alone.

Come back in >2 months and ask then.

Not last year it didn't. He was arguably at his most physical, on the stat sheet at least, of his career. I take into account all of his stats suffered in 2011-12 on account of his hand injury. Getting hit by a car can really put a crimp in your hockey numbers. Unless you are Brendan Witt of course.

Saw a good chunk of the Winnipeg/Edmonton game, he looked pretty good. While I may regret saying this as we are now in the same division, and looks like the Jets may be our de facto rival, but I hope he works out well for you all.

I could see Gooch maybe being packaged to upgrade goaltending come deadline time, or sooner if he isn't happy in the Peg. But that is putting the cart before the horse at this point.

You have no idea what you're talking about.

1.92 hits per game last season with Minnesota. 1.92 hits per game with San Jose in 2010-2011. 1.77 hits per game with San Jose in 2009-2010. Not counting his first season with the Wild as he was struggling with injuries throughout the year, especially since he was struck by a car before the season even started.
