Damn it! I wanted him on the habs to play with Galchenyuk.

The Wilds needs to make some noise in the playoffs with the all great talent they got.

Good signing. He will likely decline offensively and the Wild aren't paying him for his performance from the past but for the future. Great term too, only five years instead of 7-8.

Let's just hope the Wild have the same approach to Vanek. $7-8m per for 7-8 years would be a disaster of a signing, if they are given the opportunity.

He's getting up there in age, but the contract is a good compromise for both sides.

awesome deal compared to the ridicilous contracts that have been made this summer and also huge step towards signing Vanek. I'm really starting to think Minny can sign him next summer. Minnesota might just be a cup favorite next season.

I'm starting to hope we don't go after Vanek... His price tag is too high.

Good deal. Nice term and I think a $400-600K discount.

are you sure? i mean top 6 with Koivu, Parise, Pominville, Vanek and maybe Coyle and Granlund or which ever Minny's kids pan out. Suter and Brodin as top defencemen and Bäckström as goalie who still is capable netminder for contender. I think you guys could go very far in next few seasons.

Great deal for a ~65-75 point playmaker.

It depends on a) what Vanek's demands would be and b) whether Granlund/Nino are looking like legit NHL players.

I'd rather keep 2-3 of the younger guys at $7-$8 total vs. $7-$8 for a 30+ year old Vanek.

That would make us very top-heavy. We'll need cap space for rookies once ELC's expire. Out of Brodin, Coyle, Granlund, Neiderrieter, Zucker, and Dumba, somebody's going to warrant a decent contract; it would be poor management to sign Vanek without budgeting for younger players.

Plus signing Vanek means trading at least one, probably two of Zucker, Granlund, Coyle or Nino.

Considering what the Wild gave up for Pominville, would that completely decimate their depth?

Why? Konopka and Rupp expire after this year, if they are capable of playing top 6, they should be fine on the third line. No rule saying you can't have three good offensive lines.

Parise-Koivu-Zucker/Nino
Vanek-Granlund-Pominville (this line would get a ton of O-zone starts)
Cooke-Coyle -Nino/Zucker
Fontaine-Brodziak-Mitchell (get the tough minutes)

Thats a lineup that can roll 4 lines without a problem. And a lineup thats a contender(assuming the kids improve)

That's fine for next year, but in 3-4 years when Brodin/Granlund/Nino/Coyle are on or looking for their 2nd contracts, I'd rather not dump guys in their mid-20's because we have too many guys in their 30's making a lot of money. We are right on the edge of my comfort level right now, adding Vanek to that pushes it over the edge.

Great deal for the Wild. Probably could've gotten 6M on the market easy.

that's just like I thought as well and if you lose some of your youngsters is it really that bad. i mean possibility that any of them becomes as good as Vanek is very slim. and after their ELC you can probably sign them fairly cheap with bridge contracts. then you have few seasons more time to figure who you wanna keep plus the cap limit at that point will almost certainly be lot higher than now.

in my opinion it is better to be contender for couple of years than be playoff team for 10 years. I'm not saying Vanek makes Wild automatically a Stanley Cup winner but he would improve Minny a lot. and as we have seen in the cap era you need to sacrifice some players sometimes to win.
