I tried calling my local rink to see if I could join up for a league...turns out they are part of a national park or something and are closed because of the government shutdown.

Another think I learned at practice, I need to be way more aggressive in the offensive zone.

My defensive positioning is usually pretty good, but in the offensive zone, I tend to try and get myself open for passes so I can get quick shots off. But I guess that means I am not supporting the puck carrier enough and usually am too far away from the play and/or have a defender who can get in the passing lane too easily. Apparently I need to damn near shadow the puck carrier so that I can be a passing option or provide support in puck battles.

Another thing is that I'm often on the wrong side of the net. Usually I'm on the weak side trying to find an open lane as a passing option, but I should be either screening the goalie more or at the side of the net on the strong side, so I can again be a passing option without dealing with the defender in the slot.

Should be interesting to see how all that shakes out in the tourney this weekend.

Any idea how long this government shutdown is supposed to last?

So is it a labour issue? Or what is causing it? I'm supposed to be going to the US on a work permit that is supposed to be processed at the border, but that's in limbo now.

I'm needing it resolved by Wednesday of next week, think this is likely?

I'll call Barry and find out. Honestly you can't ever know, hope for you they'll get it done this week. Still enough days left.

AHA tourney? Same here. Hopefully we don't suck!

I have a rotisserie chicken and will be making a bunch of quinoa/couscous/pilaf. For some reason that's what I like to eat for tourneys.

Love the few tournaments I have been able to do (Vegas, 3v3 Ironman overnight). Wish we had local ones, but makes the yearly Vegas one that much more to look forward to.

Today I retaped my sticks, just to do anything related to hockey because I can't wait for my second ever practice on Tuesday!

How often do you normally go without taping them? I honestly cannot go without taping it before every skate

I tape them maybe twice a season? If the bottom tape has all worn off or if there are lots of holes then I know it's time for a re-tape. I can't imagine doing it every time!

Was the 3v3 overnight in Oakland? Always a good time.

I try to keep the tape on as long as possible so that I don't waste all my money on tape. Didn't work too well so far...

Played two games in our tourney. We are awful. Maybe 2-3 wins in 20 games this season I bet.

Today I got a decent handle on glove side butterfly pushes!
Still need a bit of work, but my skate doesn't just shoot out from under me each time now and I am starting to be able to push back to the post when I butterfly at the top of the crease

Blocker side is still a mess... Even throwing my leg/skate up to plant for the push feels off.

Played my first organized game in over 15 years, and took my first faceoffs that I can ever remember doing on ice.

Signed up on a whim for a 'rookie' league. I'm leagues better in skating than most people in it, but I've not had a lesson from a coach since I was 10 years old and want to actually learn proper positioning.

Yessir!

Played w/ the Mastodons just for the tournament. They were getting their first taste of C2. Didn't win any games but they're getting better. Got to play forward, which was pretty fun... usually play D for the most part.
