The Attitude Era

As 24yr old, I grew up through the Attitude Era.

I loved it, and I'll never forget it. I understand that they're now a PG product, and I understand why. I know they won't go back to an adult-centric product, and I'm ok with that.

But I still get excited watching these old RAWs.

Amazing stuff. A fantastic show, from start to finish.

If Vince wants better ratings and more money
He needs to go back.

But he won't.

He'd lose a lot of money. WWE today is more financially successful because of the amount of sponsorships they have. They go back to the AE and they lose a huge chunk of those sponsorships.

The reason the AE was so successful was because it fit with that way of thinking among society back then. Today? Not gonna work one bit.

Sponsors go to the ratings. if ratings doubled you think he would lose them?
Not a chance

If Raw was getting 5's but had racy content, there's no way most of those sponsors would stick around. Their sponsors are very "PG-friendly"...not MA friendly.

The attitude era wouldn't work today anyways.

No other era will ever top it that's for sure. That's the era I grew up on. I kind of feel bad for kids these days. They really don't know what they're missing.

Who knows, maybe it'll happen again years from now. In the '80s and early '90s no one expected it would evolve the way it did. I saw it come and go, it was great. I got out of watching toward the end of it, and now I can hardly find interest when I tune in. I doubt many would agree but I miss the taped content sandwiched between the host(s) of whichever show was on at the time (i.e., Heenan and Gorilla of course during Prime Time, SNME, etc.). Most of what happened back then couldn't work in the always-live setting of today.

There's a reason JVC Kaboombox was the Attitude Era's biggest sponsor.

Getting rid of PG and having more adult-oriented content will not magically make the creative team into better writers.

WWE being PG is not the problem. It's the crappy storylines.

WWE existed before 1997, and it was awesome.

Also, most of the best stuff during the attitude era wasn't even that adult-oriented. Let's say WWE was PG in 1998, the only major thing that I can think of that would have been affected is DX and there wouldn't be so many almost-naked chicks. And Austin wouldn't be able to use the middle finger, but is that really a big deal?

I'm sure most of it is nostalgia, but it is my fondest memory of watching wresting as a kid. Wrestlemania X7 is my all time favourite PPV.

Agreed. While I really enjoyed the Invasion angle, it could have and should have been so much more than it was.

They could still run 90% of the Attitude Era storylines now, all they need are decent writers and not the crap they have in creative now

It was THE MOMENT every wrestling fan had waited for. The two companies going head-to-head. Unfortunately a lot of the bigger named WCW wrestlers decided to sit out their AOL contracts so their draw power wasn't that big which is why they had ECW align with WCW (which made no sense)

I just miss that Nitro/Raw dynamic that would be hard to replicate today with DVRs. The Monday Night Wars coincided with my family getting internet in the mid 90s and I'd spend more time than I'd like to admit constantly checking various sites for "inside" info about which guys might jump ship. I'd probably check that as often as I'd check the trade rumors forum on HF now.

The Attitude Era and Ruthless Agression era that followed were the best years of wrestling ever. WCW and ECW were also great in the mid-late 90s.

I loved the Invasion Angle and that period but it was still botched in way. They overreacted to the ****** Bagwell-Booker match then Bagwell got fired a week later and the angle eventually ended with Alliance burial.

One thing though instead of having random guys like Test turn it shoulda been ex-WCW guys like a Jericho. Also DDP was buried at the end of that stalker angle and couldn't recover.

That, and Stacker 2, and Lugz, and that energy drink X-Pac endorsed for whatever reason. Yep, people don't think about things like that.

Only reason content was edgier was because it had to be to stay alive. It's why Bischoff was able to make WCW a legitimate contender in such short time, he knew WWE wasn't targeting the right demographics with content and he took advantage. It's not like he invented the wheel and the WWF never thought about that sort of thing, McMahon simply went for the more family friendly content to make more money. He only became edgier when he had to and toned it down when he didn't.

Lita's pop at times was bigger than Austin, Rock etc..on shows

I grew up through the attitude era(late teens) so I can definitely appreciate most of it compared to the early-mid 90's WWF. But I also was more accustomed to it as I saw ECW prior to it and WWF was essentially ripping off a good portion.

But when you look back now, the attitude era had a lot of crap(higher power). Same goes for ECW. You just didn't mind because the crowds were usually great.

I also agree with what Triple H said I believe not too long ago. You can't do the Attitude Era forever. Like all things, it will burn out and it was.

Agreed, I grew up watching the Attitude Era too. As awesome as it was, and as much as I want to see them go over the top with the things they do nowadays, the writing nowadays just sucks. It seems like every Raw & Smackdown now is a rerun of the week before. Even the PPVs are really predictable.

They need to focus on getting better writers before they need to try going back to the Attitude Era scene. Better wrestlers would be good too. Also, have the wrestlers take speech lessons. CM Punk is probably the only one that I really want to listen to.

People seem to forget that the Attitude Era had a lot of garbage during it, more than today. But the thing that made it great was that almost everyone was over. There were so many feuds going on at once. We hardly even get midcard feuds now.

How many feuds are going on in WWE right now? Bryan/Show/Rhodes/Goldust vs. Orton/Shield/HHH, CM Punk vs. Heyman guys, and AJ vs. Total Divas. Del Rio vs. RVD seems to have ended. Maybe Axel vs. Truth will turn into a proper feud, but that's all I can think of right now.
