Eakins was a great coach, excellent for development of some of our current Leafs ... However his personal goals of becoming an NHL coach clearly influenced his decision making in his last year or two - that is, he cared about making the Marlies a winning team rather than just develop the kids .. So he leaned on the vets to make the Marlies a winning club to help pad his record to get and NHL gig

Can't blame him for making those choices, IMO it's just the natural cycle of the AHL .. Coaches use it to develop as much as players do, so a changing of the guard is never a bad thing every several years

Wouldn't surprise me to see the same thing happen with Spott if he can make the Marlies successful

I wish they would play Blacker and officially end the Holzer experiment.

That's a great start to the season considering the overall age of the team. Still, as with most AHL teams, it was the vets who are the difference between wins and losses, in this case Smith and Brennan. How often does a Swede come over who still needs to work hard on his skating? Granberg has been caught flat footed several times already.

I definitely see Blacker or Holzer traded sometime in the upcoming weeks for a forward with similar potential/value.

I think he hasn't been 100% healthy the last couple of weeks. I could be wrong though.

Either way, he certainly has fallen a lot since turning pro. A shame because he has all the tools but the toolbox has been missing.

Teams could have had the chance to get Holzer for free but no team bites. So Holzer's trade value might depends on other teams' injuries at the backend, or as sweetner throw-in. Having said that, i dont want to give up on him, though he might quit North America next season if he still cant crack on any NHL team

not really. he took some steps last year hence his 2 call ups. he also played excellent in pre season game. there is a lot of depth on D so right now no room for him. he will get his chance eventually.

agreed. plus if you play blacker. he can actually play the PP.

the only guys who can play the PP in that line up are

percy
liles
brennan

if you add blacker. then you have 4 players who can play the PP

than the shutdown pairing can be granberg and mac

Jesse Blacker is probably going to be traded. I wouldn't be surprised if Edmonton came calling

Giving a contract/salary in return could be more beneficial. The likely scenario will be an even swap for another teams young forward who has fallen out of favour.

Not to mention the fact that the Marlies are carrying 2 others as healthy scratches in Marshall and Yuen.

Marshall is a solid AHL defenceman, but you can't argue the fact that the current 6 aren't just as valuable. Yuen is a bit of a surprise to me as to why the Marlies signed him in the first place. If you have 8 capable defencemen, then why add another 2?

Blacker seems like a guy that is close to the NHL but is in surplus on the Marlies blueline. I think you're right that Edmonton could come calling and it wouldn't shock me if Nashville or Calgary gave them a ring as well.
