Beaulieu recalled...again

Canadiens Montréal ‏@CanadiensMTL 23m
Le défenseur Nathan Beaulieu a été rappelé des Bulldogs ce soir. \ Canadiens tonight recalled defenceman Nathan Beaulieu from Hamilton.

What's the deal with this? Seems like he gets recalled and sent back down every day since October 1st. Why not just keep him up?

Going out west, make sure they have enough abled bodies to play in case any injuries occur while out there.

Because he won't play in Montreal if nobody's injured. They rather let him see 20+ minutes per game in Hamilton.

Salary cap reasons.

He will get his chance, maybe he plays when they have back to back games. Either way he draws NHL pay and the Habs manage the cap.

I understand that. But seeing as Hamilton's season starts on the 11th, and that Beaulieu has been recalled and sent back down thrice since the start of the NHL season and that no injured D was cleared to play, why not just keep him with the team and have him practice, instead of shipping him to Hamilton and back every couple of days. Also, is his movement actually physical or they've kept him with the team since the start and for cap/roster purposes, have to mark him as recalled?

Practise, interact and learn from the NHL players and coaches, play 20 mins per game with the AHL team. As long as he doesn't get worn out from air travel it should be good for his development.

I'm pretty sure he'd rather train with the team and earn an nhl salary. If he makes 800k a year, it means he makes 10k a game !

Maybe in Edmonton.

The way Diaz is playing, he start to be a suitable alternative.

They gain salary cap space towards the deadline by not having him up...

Renaud Lavoie ‏@LavoieRenaud 5h
I expect Nathan Beaulieu to be call up by the Canadiens later today. Its for cap reasons that he's up and down since the start of the season

Then there is something I am missing.
We have three players on LTIR.
We should have much more space.
Looking at Capgeek, I see 291K of cap space.

We have the space to accomodate him here, every day.

It,s just that we have more space if we shuffle him from Hamilton to Montreal and vice-versa.

Again, as Overloads wrote above, it's not because we don't have the cap space. It's because the Salary cap is not a flat number. It modulates throughout the season according to the number of players on the roster. If we keep him down in Hamilton when we don't need him, we don't pay him NHL money and we save some cap space that we will be able to spend later in the season (trade deadline for instance).

I doubt they've flown him back and forth to Hamilton all 3 times. Seems like a waste. they likely 'sent' him down but kept him in Montreal, no?

Have to admit, that's one of the funnier slip-ups.

I read that, and totally forgot the topic of the thread, because I was laughing so hard.

Injuried players such as Parros, Murray and Drewiske must be on the inactive for at least 14 NHL games for the cap to not count. This happened a few years ago with Markov's season ending injury. We ended up using that cap space on trading for Matt Schnieder, then the following year Markov again missed time, we use that for James Wisniewski. This is why Beaulieu has been called up and down. we don't have the cap space until after 14 NHL games.
