Team names are called, in grammatical terms, "proper" nouns. Not like a regular leaf which is a thing.

Therefore the typical rules for plurality don't apply.

Actually that's not really true, otherwise there would be the Tampa Bay Lightnings or the Colorado Avalanches.

Nope.

The fact that it's a proper noun merely ALLOWS you not to follow the plurality rules.

The best explaination I've ever heard is that back in ye good ole days, all the teams were referred to as hockey clubs. There would be the montreal canadiens hockey club, Detroit Red Wings hockey club, Toronto Maple Leafs hockey club, and they just lost the hockey club part.

I consulted a few dictionaries and found that some offer leafs as an alternative to leaves.

Very simple reason for "Leafs" not "Leaves"

When Conn Smythe bought the St. Pats, there was a team in Leaside I believe, called the Toronto Maple Leaves, so he just took Leafs.

Smythe wanted a name reflective of Canada, and it had to have the U of T colours.
