Northeast the best in hockey?

Northeast the best in hockey?
Canadian Press
1/15/2004

TORONTO (CP) - Pat Quinn pondered the question for a second and then concurred.

``You're right, I think it is the best division from top to bottom,'' said the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

He was talking about the Northeast Division, arguably the NHL's toughest to play in this season. Just ask the Boston Bruins, who entered play Thursday night in fourth place in the Northeast despite a record that was eight games over .500.

Unfortunately for the Bruins, they're in a division with the Eastern Conference-leading Leafs, the Stanley Cup favourite Ottawa Senators and the surprising and red-hot Montreal Canadiens.

Consider the facts:

_ Among the six divisions in the NHL, the Northeast is the only one with four clubs already having surpassed 50 points;

_ Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Boston occupy four of the eight playoff spots in the Eastern Conference;

_ The same four clubs were in the NHL's top 10 overall standings before Thursday's games;

I said this towards the beginning of the season at wowhockey (joke of a site, too many leaf haters). It obviously is the BEST division in all of hockey.

From top to bottom, no division has a better record this year. Buffalo, as the only team below .500, is stronger than the bottom dwellers in other divisions (well, perhaps Minnesota excepted).

Atlantic: plus 8 points
Northeast: +38
Southleast: -18
Central: -5
Northwest: +33
Pacific: +5

OTL's have amplified all these totals.

and Don't forget that you play more games against your own Division than any other ...So than one could conclude that with 4 strong teams in 1 division that in order to get this many points they must be making mince meat out of other divisions and perhaps splitting games amongst each other..
