That strike from Willian was insane. What a pick up for the Blues.

On another note, Southampton looks great. Could challenge for a Euro League berth. Great young team.

Granderson is a UIC alum. I can see him taking a cut (more than what the injuries would do) to come home.

Cubs re-sign Sweeney to two year, $2.5M deal that includes a $500K buyout for 3rd year club option. If the Cubs exercise that option, he'd make $2.5M in 2016.

Sweeney was very solid, good signing. I read they talked to Manny Acta. Good, always liked his analysis, seems pretty smart and forward thinking.

I hope Girardi is content with the fact he'll never manage the Cubs. This was his last shot to manage in his hometown and for a team he played for. I thought the Cubs had a good chance, but we all know Theo probably has legitimate backup plans in place. I just hope they are guys that wind up being able to take good teams assembled in the coming years not only to the playoffs, but also very deep.

I'm really happy we didn't get Girardi. I've said before I don't think he is a good fit here at all. I think he is a good fit in New York, and also, I was never overly impressed with his work anyway. The biggest fish isn't always the best option. I'm interested to see what other candidates get interviewed, but I can tell you right now if it was a decision between someone like Manny Acta and Girardi, even if the money and everything else was the same, which it obviously wouldn't be, I'd easily choose Acta over Girardi. He's a lot more of the Francona type of manager that I like.

Nah, we'll have another rebuild manager for 2-4 years then the organization will try to get a guy to push the team over the top when they're ready to consistently compete.

Also, is anyone really surprised? Why leave a contender with bottomless resources for a team still likely a year or two away from realistically contending? It's take a helluva lot more than hometown sentimentality for most folks.

I actually think the Cubs are going to be a lot better next year. I do think they're going to make a trade or two this off season. The tear down is over, they are now starting the build up. Almora and Bryant hit HR's in the AFL today, Bryant went 3-5 yesterday as well with a double.

Who says you have to have a big money manager to win? I anticipate this next guy will be the guy long term. If he isn't, something went badly wrong with the team. We need stability; we're very close to winning.

I'll believe we're close to winning when I see it. As it is now, our major league roster was stripped down, and even having a cabinet full of prospects doesn't change that for the time being. A lot has gotta to go right for not only all our top prospects to rise up to the majors in the next couple years, and it's definitely not a sure thing that it'll happen or that the team would gel together if it did.

Cubs in June/July vs August/September the last 2 years

2012: 25-27 to 18-42
2013: 26-28 to 17-38

The Cubs have been terrible because they trade away any useable pieces starting in mid-July. Both seasons they have gone out and signed some good pieces but then moved them to rebuild their farm system. If they go out and spend some money like I believe they will and then don't trade those guys, I think you can see a pretty significant jump in the win total for next year. I'm not saying they're going to win 85 games, but if they do what I think they're going to do, I wouldn't be shocked to see them between 73-76 wins next year.

I'm well aware of that, but we were still a sub-.500 team even before the tanking went into full force both seasons.

Even if the lion's share of our top prospects come up in time for April, which no one is anywhere near predicting, don't think we're in the playoff race just yet.

Getting better is a sure thing, but being only a few games below .500 isn't making us contenders the next few years. As a result, not expecting anything until 2016.

Right, I don't think they'll be contenders next year. But I could see them flirting with contending in 2 years. Hell, look what the Indians did, 69-94 to 92-70. Tigers went from 71 wins in 2005 to 95 wins a year later. Things can change fast in baseball.

Yes, I'm sure Girardi is crying in his cheerios about not being able to coach the Cubs...b/c he'll be coaching the Yankees.

That's offensive to the Hindenburg. At least it got off the ground.
