In Game Goalie control

Why am I so bad at handling the puck as a goalie? I just play hut and gm connected so I'm a goalie almost never. When The goalie comes out and plays the puck I am screwed because I can't seem to get him to A) Move at all. He just spins around with the puck. and B) I can't seem to get him to cover the puck. I was mashing Y(Xbox) (triangle for ps3) , but he wouldn't cover.

What am I doing wrong? How can I get him to actually skate and to actually cover?

I've never really paid attention to the tutorial.. but I wish I knew how to select the goalie to get him to fetch pucks from behind the net instead of just waiting in the crease while the other team casually strolls in for the puck.

hold x(forgot xbox button) it allows you to skate around with the goalie but your just kinda running, so be careful if it's going to be a close play

I can never actually get to the boards in time if I manually control the goalie.

I also hate how it looks like the goalie is passing one direction, but then you release the button and it goes a completely different direction.
