What we need, what we don't

Well most people seem to be convinced that Toronto needs certain things. I figured I'd post my top need and thing we don't need (yet people seem convinced we do).

Need
A Shutdown Defenceman

We have plenty of offence yet no-one who can really take it to the opposition defensively. Getting a top 2 guy in this department would take our defence to a new level and would really help against low depth teams (such as Boston or Atlanta) in the playoffs, and will especially come in handy should we make it to the cup finals (Detroit, Colorado, Vancouver ). More importantly though, it would take the pressure off of our defensmen who can be thrown around like bean bags.

Top attainable candidate: Mattias Norstrom
Secondary: Keith Carney

Not Needed
A Top Six Forward

Sluggo and company please get off of it. We have third liners that qulify as second liners on some teams. Tell me why we need a top six forward when we have the following top three lines:

Roberts-Sundin-Renberg
Tucker-Nieuwendyk-Nolan
Stajan-Antropov-Mogilny

What do you think this team really needs and why?

Obviously, but its is one of the least "needed" things for the Leafs.

BTW, am I minister of transit yet?

To get the shutdown defenceman, you likely have to trade a forward (*cough* tucker *cough*).
I would love to see Anson Carter here, he could add a scoring touch to an already powerful third line, and if Mogilny or Nolan were to go down in the playoffs he definatly has the skills to fill in.

Why do you suppose teams that are battling for a playoff spot would surrender some of their most useful players, as has been proposed in this thread? The best reason might be to unload salary or to get something for a player who will become a UFA or RFA. While we're at it, the Leafs could have signed de Vries, Wesley, or both if they hadn't been in a state of front office paralysis. IMO, those two would have been better choices than Marchment.

L.A.'s doner than ckicken. Their top 5 forwards are all out with injury, Chechmanek is proving that Philly boosts goaltending stats and Norstrom is the only one who can play defense.

The Mighty Ducks on the other hand are eight points out right now and don't look like they'll be climbing the standings ladder soon.

Even a team that has fallen behind doesn't have to have a garage sale. LA has serious injuries but most of the injured players will back next season. Surely they'd want to plan for the future, and why would those plans include Darcy Tucker, for example? Aftre all, they will have a core of good forwards. Same for Anaheim. Finally, there are a lot of teams that would be interested in a Carney, not just the Leafs.
