Credit where credit is due, the man played well. We have maybe three players who go to the net (Joensuu, Perron, Smyth), and he was in vintage form.

Maybe give him the Selanne treatment? Scratch him every couple of games for him to recuperate, don't play him on back to back nights.

This would be ideal.

Fact of the matter is a lot of Oiler players don't get that goal and don't get to that greasy spot with conviction.
He played great but only reason he was at the net to score that was Arcobello spinning around at blueline than feeding Eberle Smyth was at center Ice when Arco entered zone. I don't know if Arco read that but was a beautiful play from start to finish

He looked ten years younger tonight, what the hell happened? I hope he keeps this up and makes all the doubters (myself included) look like idiots.

i think we can safely say that the most useless on this team is somebody other than Smyttie and its pretty obvious who that player is.

Nah, he's directly contributing to wins for the other team.

I think people blamed him for Hall's struggles based on preconceived notions. He's done a good job through preseason and early on. People exaggerate his mistakes so much it's really embarrassing to read. I've always said at this point he should be a guy who's near the bottom in ice time at the end of the season but has the versatility to help you out all over the lineup. He can be an asset on special teams, and he can fill out a scoring line from time to time. One of the few guys in the bottom 6 who wasn't the problem last year too. Smyth's a pro and a player with an elite past, 3 best on best team Canada selections and in the conversation for a 4th. He's got more skill than he get's credit for a does the little things needed to create room for his teammates.

Maybe your ignorant little "meme" attempt in the other thread wasn't all that fair? I'm not saying Smyth is a perfect player or will be this good every night but he sure looked like a guy who can "pinch hit in the top six" to me tonight.

He is also playing 13 min a night which is much better imo.

I am not a huge fan of Smyth still playing for the Oilers. However, he played an excellent game tonight.

I think having Arcobello and Eberle are good linemates for Smyth because they are willing and able to slow the play down which gives Smyth the time he needs to get in position.

When standing still, along the boards, or in front of the net, Smyth is still a good hockey player.

He turned back the clock tonight which was great to see. His play reminded me why he was my favorite player for years.

3 goals in 2 games at least he is showing some grit to get it done.

If he did this every night, he would have scored 164 goals in a season (2g per game), and you still would want him retired after the season. riiiiight.

Was good to see him actually going hard to the net and getting rewarded for it. I still like the guy despite everyone wanting rid of him.

Remember when all he used to do was park himself directly in front of a goalie and drive them nuts? why doesn't he do that anymore? or to the same extent he used to?

More of that.

He is no longer the most useless player. That honor belongs to Dubnyk

I would keep Smyth where he is for the time being. At the same time, the fact that he actually showed some jump for 1 game doesn't make up for the past year and a half of absolute garbage. It also raises questions as to why he wasn't skating hard before the scratch.

As I said before, Smyth is at most a complementary top 6 player. He has no game and no tools to play in the bottom 6, and was terrible all of last year in that role. He loses puck battles constantly (spends more time on his butt than Gagner), and is too slow to establish a forecheck. None of these problems are going to go away. 38 year old players don't get better, they continue to decline.

As soon as he stops producing, Yak should be back up in the top 6. In the meantime, they should try Yak on the 3rd or 4th line and sit Brown.

He played a little over 17 in the first game against Winnipeg but it's now been 3 games in a row in the 11-13 minutes range. When he was on the "1st line" and Yakupov on the "3rd" he was actually getting less ice time.

Manly/courageous of you to say so. I've gotten carried away myself too at times, so at least it's common ground.
