Well Ottawa let Alfie walk away.

Not sure if Marc Bergevin is ready to let Markov walk away.

Also, Markov always accepted less money to stay here, in his pre-injury time, he was one of most undervalued defenseman at 5.3M$ per. Signing him at 5M$ for 2-3 seasons would be a just return. Also he is a great mentor for Tinordi and Beaulieu.

I love Markov. He still has value, at least for another two/three years, but where is this hypothetical 4-5M$ supposed to come from? Next season, Eller, Emelin and Subban combined will eat about 16M$ of our cap, leaving us about 6M$ to sign another three/four players. Markov's valuable, but not more valuable than the younger core who'll be in their prime over the next few years.
We actually would have over 7M, and that's assuming the cap doesn't go up which it's quite likely to do. In terms of other players we need 2 or 3 to fill out the roster we are talking about a 4th liner and a couple guys who sit in the pressbox. You can easily afford a 5m+ player.

So what do we do in 2015 when we've got Galchenyuk, Tinordi, Gallagher, Beaulieu, Bournival, and Thomas as RFAs but only $5mil in cap space? The cap isn't going up by $10mil in two years, I don't see how that's possible.

Why are people struggling with the long-term implications of signing a one-dimensional defenceman to a long term (3-5 years) +35 contract for around $5mil? This should be common sense. We all laughed at the Gonchar and Streit deals.... now we're wanting to make the same mistake?

Why are people struggling to understand a defenceman who plays 25min a night in every game situation is not a one-dimensional player?

None of Tinordi, Beaulieu, Bournival, Thomas are looking at big raises. 5M will likely cover all of those players. The only question is the Gallys. The cap going up by 4m and Briere's contract expiring will probably cover it (Especially if they get a bridge deal instead of a long term deal) if Galchenyuk does breakout big time and earns a 6m+ deal then it almost assuredly means he's taken over as #1 center and Plekanec becomes expendable. You can also buy out Desharnais to save a little over 2m a year. It's really not that hard to manage the cap, year after year we've seen teams in supposed cap trouble not have any trouble keeping their players.

As for the cap not going up by 10m within 2 years, it happens more often then not.

Year 1: 5m increase
Year 2: 6.3m increase
Year 3: 6.4m increase
Year 4: 0.1m increase
Year 5: 3.4m increase
Year 6: 5.9m increase
Year 7: Lowered via CBA negotiations

Really there was only 1 year it didn't rise significantly and it happened to coincide with a global financial crash.

I think teh Gonchar deal was pretty good for the Stars.

Streit would not be a mistake if Pronger was still aorund to cover his ass. But Streit is about the only worthwhile D they have along with Timonen.

Also, we doN,t know what kind of contract Tinordi, Beaulieu, Bournival and Thomas will pull at that time or what the cap will be eitehr.

First, you don't know this.

Secondly, he's a better player now than either of those guys were then.

Third, it's not the next two years we should be looking at... We aren't winning anything this year so look towards the future if you can land somebody.

If the value's not there... fine. But I'd definitely have my eyes open for any good returns.

2 years, 9-10 million and after that if still healthy, an annual one year offer for a fair hometown discount. Markov to Subban on the PP for a few more years please

I think you have to look at who you want to keep and then look at who's left over and start cutting from there. We'll have over $10 million cap hit for 3 players - Bourque, Gorges and DD and I would trade 1 or 2 of those and keep Markov, it will make for a better overall team.
