Get to know Roland McKeown

Quote:
He’s described by many as a franchise player at the junior level – a player you build your team around. It should be a great battle between McKeown and Aaron Ekblad as the number 1 defenseman to be drafted at the NHL Draft.

We had the opportunity to speak with Frontenac’s head scout Jeff McKercher:

ITO: There is no question Roland is an excellent skater who possesses extraordinary offensive abilities. How has his defensive game developed?

McKercher: Roland's really improved his defensive game as you can see by his +9 rating right now but I think the biggest thing for him is he got a lot stronger over the summer and this has really helped him out. Let’s face it, it’s tough for any 16yr old to come into our league and then we ask him to play 20 plus minutes a night against quite often the other team's top lines like he did last year. You won't find many 16yr olds that can do what he did. He's really taken his defensive game to another level and it’s been good to see.
http://ohlwriters.com/articles/rolan...player-profile

Throw in Anthony DeAngelo with Ekblad and McKeown and you have three high-end defenseman from the OHL (note - high end is not elite) although DeAngelo comes with some issues a teams going to have to work on.

So in other words we're not picking in the top half of the draft.

Maybe 5 years from now, but I definitely don't think the solution to our problems will come in the form of a rookie or even sophomore defenseman, regardless of who he is.

Is there a consensus top goalie prospect this draft ?
Roy and bunz don't look to be the answer. Also so forwards with size who can play in all situations would be nice

There's this NHL.com article to your question

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=683206

Thatcher Demko sounds interesting, he's big and athletic with a great name.

Don't think there's a consensus right now, but I'd keep Alex Nedeljkovic of the Plymouth Whalers in mind.

I figure we could be in a position to draft Virtanen. He's a bigger guy, who does to the net and has a nice scoring touch

Hall-RNH-Yak
Perron-Gagner-Eberle
Virtanen-Gordon-Hemsky

Seems like it would be a really good idea to trade the pick this year. Of course, it can't be just thrown away.

If we are picking in the top 15 I think we need to move the pick for a veteran and a young goalie, something like that.

Hopefully we're not bad enough to pick him, but I would love to grab Michael Dal Colle.

Another interesting guy is Nick Ritchie.

He looked huge last year and is listed at 6'3'' 235lbs now!

Powerforward LWer with skill, grit and skating.

If we trade our pick this year, I would prefer that we trade it along with somebody like Petry, or Eberle to return a really good player, rather than giving it away for a 'meh' return. I also think we would be better off signing a UFA goalie than overpaying for one via trade.

Is he still playing LW with the Generals? With Laughton back too?

I want a pivot this draft. Crushing on McCann right now. Bennett's creeping up my interest meter too. Like Barbashev but his faceoff numbers are weak.

Yeah. Pretty sure he's still at LW, although supposedly he's a natural center.

How about those OHLers? Brendan Perlini with 5 points tonight and now leads the league in scoring.

There's 5 draft eligible forwards in the league's top 20 scorers. Outside of Ho-Sang(5'11''), they aren't shrimps or offense-only guys either.

Perlini(6'2''), Dal Colle(6'2''), McCann(6'1''), Bennet(6').

Even more impressive...3 of the top 5 defenseman scorers in the OHL are draft eligible.

DeAngelo, McKeown and Ekblad.

The OHL also has arguably the best goalie in the draft in Alex Nedeljkovic.

I'm pretty excited to hopefully catch a bunch of games this year.

Suck Bad for Ekblad: The 2014 Draft thread

Well, I've seen enough ****** hockey to know we're lottery bound again. Time to talk future. Not sure we'll be bad enough for this guy, but wondering who some of the other posters think we should target and why. One guy I like who's off to a good start and might be in the Oil's range is Jared McCann, teammate of Darnell Nurse.

PS: I know some people will freak at the attitude of the thread title, just being facetious.

Edit: Didn't realize there was already a draft thread. Is this our curse for being the last true dynasty in hockey (84-90)?

If this thread doesn't start with "Draft a goalie" it's not doing it's job.

as I've posted in OHL thread, I had a good feeling about Perlini, and he is looking like he is making a case for a top ten selection.

6'02 195lbs. 9gp. 10g, 9a. He is putting up points on the weakest Niagara Ice Dogs team I have ever seen. Only has Verhaeghe to play with out there. He is big, strong and fast. Good puck move moment, great shot and can dangle too. Getting more time on the PK and has been focusing all season on improving his two way play.

Highlight video at bottom of link. Perlini scores 2nd and 3rd for Ice Dogs in it. His 1st goal is just being in the right spot on the Powerplay. Nice move on the 2nd.

Oilers should draft Aaron Ekblad!! Then the rebuilding is definitely over!!

Wouldn't it be awesome if Edmonton got Ekblad with the first overall pick.....haha!
This team would be stacked!! And if their able to trade Ales Hemsky this year for a first rounder in 2014, and get Alex Nedeljkovic. He reminds me a bit of Cory Schneider, and at his peak, Jonathan Quick. He's just 6'0, but he's very agile, quick and flexible. Also, he will be someone to push for the starters job from Devon Dubnyk. Here's what the Oilers lineup could be like in two years.

Hall - Nugent-Hopkins - Eberle
Perron - Gagner - Yakapov
Smyth - Gordon - Joensuu
Gazdic - Lander - Brown
MacIntyre/Acobello

Ekblad - J. Schultz
Nurse - Klefbom
Gernat - Marancin
Musil/Belov

Nedelkjovic
Dubnyk

Looks like a stacked team, and get this, their defense corps would all be over 6'2. That's huge!! Teams would not want to face Edmonton's huge defense. Not to mention their offense, and they'll have a great goalie.

It typically takes more than two years for a d-prospect to become top-pairing and for a g-prospect to become a starting goalie.

And Smyth can barely skate as it is, let alone in two years.
