Way off.

Markov 5.5+
Souray 4.5
Rivet 2.7

Plus you want Gainey to pay upwards of $11M for Souray and Markov? Not a chance he does this if he's a good GM.

This seems odd. It's hard to believe that the NHL revenue has increased from last season.

Can anyone read the agreement differently, and see if I'm taking this out of context?

IMO, Markov will get a Kaberle-type contract. For Souray, I'm pretty sure he'll be overpaid. There'll be at least one team that will go postal and offer him the moon. Rivet should get a Staios-type contrat.

All in all, those three should cost around 14.5M$ next year (Markov 5.5, Souray 6 and Rivet 3). That is roughly 30% of next year Habs payroll. Add to that Kovalev, Koivu and Samsonov's contract... and you get 27.25M$ for 6 players. Not to say that we will have to re-sign guys like Ryder and Johnson.

I doubt we will really sign our 3 Ds...

Some people don't understand that "signing" an UFA means that the UFA wants to sign here too, which is clearly not the case with Souray.

And this is why Souray will not be signed.

Managin a cap is all about getting optimum value for every dollar spent.

Right now, Markov and Souray are underpaid (cumulative 5 million for players worth around 7 or 8).

Markov deservres a salary in the 4-5 million range.

Souray deserves a salary in the 3.5 to 4.5 million range.

Anything more than that, and you'll be overpaying. And since its almost assured that Souray will be offerd 5+, then we have to let him go and use the 4.5 million we WOULD have spent on him somewhere else.

No big loss.

Yes, but we would still have to let Bonk, Abby and Janne walk to save their money to sign the RFA's. Janne is no big loss. Thats 6.8mill plus the 3.5mill =10.1 million. Souray and Markov combined will eat about 6 million of that. Huets contract will go down by $500,000 next year also.

Rivet is probably going to get the same as he is making, 3.5 is crazy for a descent no.4 d man.

As long as the Habs sign Markov to a multi-year contract around 5, I couldn't care less about Souray and Rivet. Let them get their big bucks elsewhere.

Give a multi-year 5M+ to Rafalski instead of Souray.

Markov-Rafalski
Bouillon-Komisarek
Streit-Dandenault

I definitely like those pairings. We might miss the big shot point from Sheldon, but with Rafalski, our defense looks way better.

We'd be a lot closer to it if it wasn't for Huet and Abby. In the last 12 games, our goaltenders have a .926 save percentage, and we've got a 7-5 record; that is unacceptable. .926 should get this team at LEAST 10 wins in that time span.

We may get more money to sign our UFAs, but other teams get more money to sign our UFAs too.

Is this not where the Habs payrole was before the lockout?
Is this what the NHLPA was so afraid of?

HUMMMM! Its seems that the big difference is the top 5% of players can't just walk in and demand whatever they want or start a bidding war anymore. BIG teams cant outbid and buy whatever they want.

So this is a bad thing because???????

Souray is not UFA until june 1st. What most people don't understand is that UFA's don't want to sign here, they just don't want to. That's why we end up with guys like Samsonov.

Who will play defence next year if no UFA's want to come to Montreal?

So far for next year,

Koivu- 4.75 cap hit
Kovy- 4.5
Sammy- 3.525
Huet- 2.875
Bouillon- 1.875
Dandenault- 1.725
Begin- 1,057,333
Latendresse- 850K
Murray- 600K
Streit- 600K

Total- 9 players @ 22, 357, 333M

RFA's- Komisarek, Ryder, Higgins, Perezhogin, Plekanec
UFA's- Markov, Souray, Rivet, Ninny, Abby, Bonkers, Johnson, Downey

Komisarek makes 946,827K, so expect over 1M for him
Ryder makes 2.2M, can go to salary arb, so expect over 2.5M
Higgins makes 672,980K, so expect a hefty raise I'm guessing over 1M, can't go to salary arb
Perezhogin makes 627K, I'd guess will make over 750K but can't go to salary arb either
Plekanec makes 450K, I'd guess will get over 650K can't go to salary arb either

So these players should all be back, I'm guessing over 6M for the 5 of them, Ryder hopefully doesn't go to salary arbration, If they continue to hand out money like they did this summer, I'd think he'd get over 3M.

So we would be looking at 14 players at over 28M.

A lot can happen between now and then. Who knows what Murray's future is with the team. Kostitsyn has to make the team next year or traded cause he won't clear waivers. Lapierre should make a strong bid to make the team. Got to think some of the UFA's will test the water. Can't see all 8 coming back. I'm mostly concerned about Markov/Souray. Personally I hate to lose one but losing two would be a nightmare. I hope to see Gainey find a way to keep both but who knows how much they will ask for and if they want to stay (more Souray for personal reasons)

I fully expect Rivet back, just hope he doesn't get 3.5M, ouch. I could see Abby gone, maybe Downey too. Niinimaa has to be gone. Bonk and Johnson are interesting, I like what I've seen from them, would like to see them back, don't know how much they like it here and what they could get on the open market.

With 14 players signed, we should have about 18M in cap space if the cap is 46M, 19M if 47M.

If Souray and Markov are looking at around 5M each, Im just guessing. Say Rivet gets 3M, Bonk and Johnson perhaps could cost 2M each, that's 17M right there. That would be around 45M for 19 players.

If we decide to retain Markov and Souray, and let all of our other UFA's go, this would be my projected 23 man roster. I would seriously entertain the possibility of dealing Samsonov or Ryder for a 2nd line center, unless Grabovski proves he can play next season:

Koivu 4750000
Plekanec 1000000 Projected
Grabovski 725000
Lapierre 583333

Kovalev 4500000
Samsonov 3525000
Ryder 2200000 Projected
Higgins 2000000 Projected
Perezhogin 1200000 Projected
Begin 1057000
Latendresse 850000
Kostsitsyn 785333
Murray 600000

Souray 5500000 Projected
Markov 5500000 Projected
Komisarek 2000000 Projected
Bouillon 1875000
Dandenault 1725000
Streit 600000
Emelin/Cote 600000 Projected

Huet 2875000
Halak 491667

Total 44942333

That would leave about 3 million max to sign Rivet or upgrade the 2nd line center spot if no trades are made.

I was watching TSN or another sports channels sports ticker last night ,and I thought I seen a cap increase of 7 mil . I just seen it for a split second ,so I might of missed the 4 which would make the cap 47 m. I just wanted to know if anyone thought they seen this ? . I was thinking after I read this thread that maybe they had a typo .I swear it said the cap was going up 7 m ,but like I said I just caught a glimpse .
