They were outplayed but capitalized on their chances. I'll take it.
I disagree. I think the Marlies had more shots, but they were kept to the outside far more than the Amerks were. The Amerks' Defense did a very nice job of helping out Liuwen, who played a fantastic game. His rebound control was excellent. He looked miles better than Hackett has this year.
Luke Adam continues to be a new player. It's refreshing to watch. He's going to get a shot with Buffalo this year at some point for sure.
Varone looked good. JGL had a great game on D - he looked like Karlsson, playing great positionally, winning battles, and making great outlet passes.
Team looked good tonight. Tomorrow will be an emotional game for sure. Utica comes back into the building, and I KNOW the Amerks are going to respond for what happened last weekend. Utica hasn't won a game yet, so they'll be desperate. I'm excited. It will be better than the Sabres game...
If a coach could draw up how he'd like a game to go, Friday's 4-1 victory by the Rochester Americans over the Toronto Marlies would be pretty close to that ideal script.
Score early (really early), add to the lead, withstand mid-game pressure, fend off one of the AHL's elite power plays, and then pull away in the third period. Along the way, have your young goaltender show poise and confidence -- and make a lot of saves.
The Amerks did just that. Dan Catenacci scored nine seconds into the game and Luke Adam continued to find the net by scoring his fourth goal midway through the period for a 2-0 lead.
The Marlies had plenty of pressure with their power play but couldn't score (0 for 6). And while a good portion of the game was played in the Amerks zone, coach Chadd Cassidy was quite content with the overall performance.
It seems like Lieuwen has established his spot in the team. Hopefully they can send Makarov to an ECHL team to get him some playing time.
Looking around the ECHL, it looks like Wheeling may be the best opportunity for him. Despite being affiliated with both Pittsburgh and Montreal, they have two journeymen goalies and no prospects at that position.
I wonder if they give Luke a shot on wing? It wouldn't hurt to give him one more chance. It sounds like he realizes this is his last shot with the team, and right now is as good as time as any to make a push for the roster.
