Yeah, but in all fairness, if we had these numbers last year, we most likely make the playoffs.

You really can't see the difference between the problems this team had last year and the problems this team has this year?

If we still had Bryz we would be terrible offensively and defensively

.900, 2.73 GAA

VS

.923, 2.37 GAA.

These numbers are completely different. The team's offensive and defensive stats as well as observable play were good enough to sneak into the playoffs, had they only gotten some sort of respectable goaltending. You know what wasn't good enough? Bryzgalov taking a huge crap in the crease practically nightly.

Why don't you try comparing this year's offense to last year's? Let's see how those compare. If you think the problems with the team this year are identical to last year you are in denial. Last year was a good offense with average defense in front of a terrible goalie. Now we have a bad offense with average defense in front of a good goalie.

Edit: Seriously, please explain to me why you believe that Mason playing well this season somehow indicates Bryzgalov wasn't an enormous problem last season?

why on earth are you guys looking backwards ?

Bryz ? really ? you are still fixated on Bryz ?? cmon, you cannot be serious.

my point was [and is] that this team needs to address a few key areas, none of which were / are goaltending.

the fact that we still suck, even with great goaltending numbers, fully supports my views.

i'm looking ahead, not behind. Ive got no interest in debating Biron, Bob, Bryz, Hackett or any fmr Flyer goalie.

my views remain: we need to fix this team, not the goaltending. period.

Holy crap.

The goaltending was a HUGE problem last year. The team was not, in comparison. They were average defensively and good offensively; they produced goals. This year we have a DIFFERENT problem.

Please, take one minute to compare the offensive production from this year and last. You'll see the situation just isn't the same.

In no way does Mason actually playing well behind this team prove anything you think it does. All it shows is that the team wasn't the problem for the goaltending woes last year. The goalie was.

You can ignore past goalies all you want. That doesn't make any shred of sense, but you can. It doesn't change simple facts, though, especially since you are implicitly comparing last year, last year's goaltending, and this year and its goaltending. How do you do that without considering the past?

Huge difference: no offensive production this year.

I'm also confused about a certain point. We have Mason, a player who outperformed the reigning goalie last season, as well as this season on a crappier version of the team. How exactly does that make last year's goaltending look any better?

We've seen player quotes about how they lack confidence because they're so used to losing no matter what; scoring goals didn't make a difference. You know how they got that impression? They spent 2 years in front of a goalie who let in a constant stream of backbreaking goals.

Mason has been the Flyers best player so far.

That's a bad thing.

I'm not very astute about goaltending but I particularly enjoyed watching the wall that was Mason's blocker side on the powerplay that the Pens seem to work exclusively off of between Malkin and Crosby. Its a nice detail for us moving forward against our biggest rival.

Still havent really seen any bad goals on Mason's part. I really like his style and think he will be great for us. Its a shame they cant put the puck in the net for him.

Then you missed the one that went right between his legs from the blue line.

He still has been awesome though.

Mason has a better SV % & GAA than Bobrovsky.

So there's that.

Bryz started off good last year too...having said this Mason does look very technically prepared and has all the tools to continue to do what he's doing (keeping them in games) but at some point they have to win for him too.

I would flip if Mason lost confidence again b/c this team can't score more than 1 goal per game...
