ellis has been up and down. he will never be more than a 3rd pairing dman.. with some use on a PP. im all for moving him when our bottom pairing is solidified without him in the picture.

Not sure I like him and Cullen at the point.

The laser from the blueline vs. NYI was pretty.
I think he'll keep getting better and cement his spot on the 3rd pairing.
The Fancy Stats community says nope & I particularly didn't like that breakaway while he was on the ice, he's been the luckiest player on the team ... he's been the 36th luckiest player in the league wrt defenseman this season (small sample size)

Actually, his fancy stats are typically pretty decent due to his heavy offensive zone deployment. Still, it goes to show that if used properly, he *can* be effective.

Ellis is playing decent in his protected minutes. He's actually playing well along the boards for the most part. The whiff last night was frustrating, but, he did the right thing and hustled back to get in the play (and miraculously not get called for a penalty in the process).

It seemed to me that the point play by Ellis was a fluke incident causing that breakaway. It is going to happen. I have no qualms about being critical of mistakes at the point on the powerplay, but this was not a mistake that bears too much scrutiny IMO.

My issue with the Human Rocket Ship is carrying him on the roster limits your options. Planning those sheltered minutes keeps you from other strategies that might put more points on the board or make your D pairings more stable. The kid is smart, but I am coming to think from a size and strength perspective he won't be an impact player on this team. Does not mean he couldn't be under the right circumstances...

That 3rd pair is playing about 15mins a game - this isn't Co*y Franson who never saw the 2nd half of a 3rd period with a lead; I know we're being careful about the matchups but it's not nearly as sheltered time the last couple nights. Ellis isn't gonna' be moving big bodies out from in front of Peks - but $uter didn't, either. He moves the puck decently, gets decent position, has a plus-shot; he's much better along the boards this year, too. I'm not ready to banish him to permanent 3rd pair just yet and if Eckholm keeps it up, that could be a mighty nice 3rd pair when Josi gets back.

I think Bartley is a bigger issue than Ellis.

they both are. but that's a 3rd pair for you. id actually like to see weber - jones/josi get a bump in TOI.. maybe a 2-3 min jump per game. they can handle it.

My little ESPN fantsy note had some info on Josi, quoting Trotz saying he was ramping things up.

Preds coach Barry Trotz said Monday that Josi has "ramped up a little bit in terms of what he's able to do" in his workouts, but it's still too early to get optimistic about a possible return date. The news is encouraging, but for the time being, Josi remains out indefinitely.

Hey, what are the general opinions on Jarred Smithson among Preds fans? What's the post-mortem on his time in Nashville? Looks like he's back in the AHL, but I'm surprised that a generally hard-working guy, who always gobbled up PK minutes doesn't at least have an NHL minimum deal.

He barely has ECHL skills but no one ever will out work him.

Cooper stated he is skating on his own now.

Effective PK guy? The minutes certainly seem to suggest it.

Hard working, good at the dot, solid defensively, o.k. along the boards, offensive aggression of a hibernating sloth.

Bartley is the problem right now. I'm comfortable with Eckholm there when Josi gets back, but maybe we should call someone up to try on the third pair.

It's being reported by Cooper and Smashville 247 that both Josi and Fisher are skating at morning skate.

Is it just me, or is "Poile to address media on Rinne situation at 10:30" a lot more ominous sounding than it should be?

Per Poile, Rinne has a spontaneous bacterial infection in his surgically repaired hip

What does this mean?

Obv infections in surgically repaired body parts aren't good...

It means Rinne is out until Thanksgiving at the earliest.

We're in big, big trouble. We were already going to be jostling for one of the wild card spots, now every game is a big deal. Hutton is going to get thrown into the fire; going up against Winnipeg again so soon might help, but this is still a really tall order for a guy with 110 minutes of NHL experience.

If we are only a few points out of the playoff race when Rinne gets back I think that would be a huge success.

We would have a majority of the games on the road (9 of the next 12!) and the team may have confidence that it can win and Pekka would push us into the playoff race.
