All-Purpose Kulikov Discussion Thread

I'm surprised this thread isn't up yet?

"Oct. 22. Damien Cox reports that the Toronto Maple Leafs have been scouting 22-year-old Florida Panthers defenceman Dmitri Kulikov, and that he might now be available. A restricted free agent after this season, Kulikov -- one of Florida's best blue-liners -- will be looking for a raise up from his $3 million salary this year. No doubt, the Panthers are ready to deal, but the young guys are likely off-limits... unless Leafs GM Dave Nonis throws a young player back the other way."

" Brian Huddle @BrianHuddle

Damien Cox reporting that #Leafs have been eyeing Dmitry Kulikov from FLA for a couple years, and that he may be available now.
10:57 AM - 22 Oct 2013
"

It's Cox, not much of a credible rumor source, but take it for what it's worth.

I'm not too interested in Kulikov to be honest, as a Leafs fan, especially when we already have so many young, talented, offensive-minded D-men in our system.

I don't think I'll like the cost to get him either. Opinions?

From a team need perspective, Kulikov may not fit for Toronto. What they need are right handed guys, defensive stalwart type players. That said, he has the talent to be an upgrade over any player not named Dion and if a guy like Gunnarsson or Gardiner is going back (along with the necessary additions), it would free up a spot for Kulikov. I would welcome this move, but it's Cox.

Agreed. He's another high-risk defenseman. He's not the stabilizer the Leafs need.

Great, another left-hand shot! At least it is only Cox. Not sure who the Leafs would want to replace with him if it were true. What kind of D is he? We have enough PMD, but could use a responsible stay at home defender.

I don't even know what we could offer Florida to make they think about moving Kulikov. Obviously from Toronto's standpoint we would HAVE to move out a d-man (Gardiner/Franson) most likely. Alone, neither of them really come close to the value Florida would want. No decent fowards are available to trade (Kessel, Lupul, JVR, Clarkson, Bozak going nowhere for various reasons), besides Kadri and Kulemin.

Gardiner + 1st should be plenty

Rather enjoying the play of Franson and Rielly right now and not willing by any means to to add another offensive d-man to a group that has more than enough offense. Also his one goal in 10 games is better than Franson and Rielly? 27pims and a -3. Rielly has less PIMS, same -3 yet 3 more points and all around better play in less games. Franson is a 0 with 8 points in 10 games and is highly effective on the PP. How about Florida keeps their prospects for once?

You're really gonna use +/- as a tool here? One team is at the top of the league and the other is at the bottom. Kulikov being only -3 I think actually adds to his value.

So you admit that Rielly can be granted the exact same argument then? Especially considering it is his first season in the NHL and his age. With all due respect. Keep Kulikov. We don't have the room.

How old is Kulikov? 23 and Reilly is only 19 you can only compare that old fart with Reilly in Florida. We take deals more seriously and don't want LH OFD anymore. We have a whole bunch of them.

Uh, I don't think you understood my argument if you think it applies to Rielly... Florida being at the bottom of the standings is going to mean a lot of the players are minus. Rielly is last of the six defenseman on the Leafs in +/-, and Kulikov is 4th of 7 d-men on the Panthers. +/- is useless when comparing players on different teams.

(I'm a Leafs fan btw, you're just criminally underating Kulikov)

If Florida is looking for going cheap players on entry level contracts that can be around for a good while, I say package Laughton maybe from the flyers. I haven't seen kulikov play this year, but from reports I believe he is off to a tough start correct? I don't think he has #1 potential, but he would give us a threat from the back end that isn't 72 years old

Why in gods name do you want to add another offensive D-man to our team then? Head scratcher at best. You'd have a case if Kulikov was more of the bog bodied hard hitting and strong positional defenseman but another puck mover? I think you need to start looking for more of a Roman Polak and less of Kulikov.

If you don't factor in he is playing 3rd pairing minutes behind Weaver and Gilbert for said bottom of league team. A team that is 26th in GA/G and the player has brought just 1 point to the table through 10 games.

Ah, yes. Would be the best defenseman after Dion. Gardiner + 1st or Kadri+

Edit - quoted the wrong person.

You have some issues...

Judging by the fact you called a 23 year old an old fart, you're probably around half of that age.

When Reilly would be 23 then come for the trade and check the value of him.

Obviously Kulikov can do better than Franson. Who needs a top powerplay anyways
