That's what it all comes down to. Not goons, not fighting, not team toughness. The league needs to do a crackdown

Do the players care about potential career-ending injury?
I don't think it is big on their list of priorities.

So much for the union, the brotherhood.

A guy like Scott will only get a paycheque is he plays like he did tonight. If the guy had velvet hands and could skate like Lafleur he wouldn't be throwing those cheap shots.

Just saying that where the rubber meets the road, there is no will.
It's not a priority to expel those who intend to injure.

Tort's was right when he used to say "there's no respect at all throughout the league."

The will will appear after a player is taken off the ice in a bodybag in front of the fans and cameras. (The way things are going chances are we will see it in the next five years.)

Just like the Lokomotiv crash was the only thing that forced Russia to start implementing reasonable safety standards on their airlines.

The event has to be big, it has to be public, and it has to have bodies. Sadly, that just the way these big, ole boy networks operate.

It really is an interesting thought. I'm not so sure I'm ready to believe that John Scott is THAT stupid

To be honest, I agree. It's crazy that there was discussion somewhere about whether the 10 game suspension of Patrick Kaleta was too harsh. Bizarre. All I can say is that Patrick Kaleta should have been banned long ago. Matt Cooke should also have been dismissed from the league -- that's it, you are gone.

The reality is that the NHLPA does not care enough about it to make it an issue. If they do not, there is no chance that the owners or league commissioner will. It is all very clear to me. I no longer wonder about all this.

Yes he was. It's pretty disgraceful, really. I wonder if the thought of ending someone's career bothers any of these people, especially the repeat offenders.

I think that in the history of the league, there were many examples of players not respecting another player. If you want an ultra-extreme example go look at the Wayne Maki - Ted Green incident.
Lack of respect is not something unheard of, but there is an awful lot of hitting from behind this season, and I look at what the league does with habitual offenders and say 'pfffft'.

Gordie Howe would smash a rookie's nose with his elbow. Welcome to the league, kid. Was that respect?

Glide by head shot by a world class goon.
He should get 20 games.

YES! That was tough watching him do that to us when I want to root for him so bad. Same deal with Ryan Miller beating us in the playoffs that one year. My Spartan hockey players have played well against us at the worst times.

Edit: Also, I am assuming you were joking on the fact that they mentioned in 120 times in the playoffs. Wasn't trying to be sarcastic with the yes! lol

just watched that video with Shannahan on McLeod...

Kronwall asked for that hit. What a joke. I guess we can't have big hits anymore

He hits kronwall right in the numbers. How was kronwall ASKING for it? Kronwall could have done a backflip and McLeod is still supposed to pace himself to avoid exactly what he did and not ride his skull into the boards.

Don't really blame Scott for the hit. That's his job. Stop admiring your pass, Eriksson.

Of course it was a headshot, of course it should have been a major. Of course Scott should be suspended. The thing is, this is still, and will continue to be, the fault of the NHL.

You want **** like this out of the game for good? Then start sending actual messages.

For all his "goonish" ways, as Mike Milbury would put it, John Scott has never been suspended... or even fined!

Comparable to other incidents around the league, if Shanahan throws the book at him and gives him 5+ games, then based on precedent set by the league, it's a bull**** suspension. Nothing would surprise me less than the NHL being the inconsistent/incompetent machine it has become.

My $0.02

Way to stop this:

-game misconduct plus a 5 minute major, minimum 10 game suspension or the length of time the injured player is out, whichever is greater. Plus benching a player of equivalent talent until the injured player comes back.

-2nd offense 20 game suspension plus the above

Will never happen but it would stop it.

Consistency is fine when the punishment starts fitting the crime. Right now guys get what equates to a timeout and a rather insignificant loss of pay. Is this Kindergarten? "Go sit in the corner ya big bully!"

They need to start handing out real consequences rather than disingenuously patronizing the fan base with slaps on the wrist. Teams don't miss these clowns usually and the players getting hurt are missed sorely.

1. Targetting the head or a dangerous boarding should result in an immediate game misconduct.

2. If the victim is injured and forced to leave the game, or any number of games, a suspension should be assessed equal to the games lost by the victim NOT including the game misconduct.

3. The offended team recieves a 5 on 3 powerplay for 2:30 and a 5 on 4 for the remaining 2:30. Unlimited scoring.

4. After the first offense leading to a suspension by a team they start losing draft positions. The second offense results in the loss of 5 draft positions in the first round the team has a pick available that draft year, and 5 more for every subsequent offense by that team until they reach the final draft position in that round or a 5th offense. After a 5th offense in a single season the highest draft pick available is forfeit that year.

5. The team matches the salary forfeit by the offending player during the length of the suspension and said money is put in to the same player's assistance fund as the forfeited salary.

Those sound like real consequences that might make not only a player think twice, but a franchise think twice about icing that kind of player.

Want to stop it? 50% of your salary as fine + team pays $1 million, as the first offense. You don't want to know the second offense.

i still cant believe Rangers traded something of value for John Scott

Chicago Blackhawks traded John Scott to the New York Rangers for a 5th round selection (Garret Ross) in 2012.

can anyone tell me how many games patrick kaleta has been susspended at this point in his career.

I think he had 5 for the richards hit. he got 10 for this last hit on johson but he already served 2 before then 10 for a total of 12. He has been suspended 5 other times besides those two.

He's been for quite a bit. What bothers me is that when he isn't playing like an arse he actually is a decent fourth liner with skating and defensive/PK effectiveness. He lets his lust for slamming people to the ice get to him and then this happens.
