Toronto had Kulikov on their radar for the 09 draft...he probably would have been our man if Kadri was off the board when we went up. I think that is where the speculation stems from, since Burke has admitted to the organization liking him back then...but he's not a great fit for us right now at all and trading Gardiner for him would be fairly lateral.

I would hope if Kulikov is available that Sakic/Roy have been inquiring. His development needs to get back on track but Avs could certainly use a player like him.

Why are we interested in Kulikov again? We already have Phaneuf, Gardiner, and Rielly.

Unless Nonis doesn't feel comfortable with Gardiner anymore, and is trying to upgrade on the same type of defenceman.

If you're going to discuss non-roster players for Kulikov in a trade, then save it because I'm not interested in any maple leafs prospects. Will gladly keep Kulikov and walk away.

Yeah, but as I just explained in my last post, we can't do that without subtracting young talent.

Who's the better skater and puck handler? If Kulikov is better, I certainly hadn't noticed. Gardiner is a fine player that is having trouble fitting into Carlyle's system. The same system that a lot of good players have trouble with. If he was with a loosey-goosey coach, he'd be a star already.

If this rumour has any legs to it at all, it's a one for one swop. I'd bet on it. Same as the JVR-Schenn deal. Two players with great upside going somewhat stagnant on their teams.

They both have a long way to go in their development, and I'd guess if there is a deal to be made, it will be straight up. I'd be surprised if TOR gave up more then a 3rd on top of it. Either way, TOR isn't the only one sniffing around.

Seriously tho, what kind of return would FLA be looking for for petrovic or bjugstad?
You're barking up the wrong tree. I don't think the Panthers are interested in moving any of their young players, being in a rebuild and all. It makes no sense. Certainly not Bjugstad or Petrovic.

Kulikov is a great young d-man and better then Gardiner right now, but the flashes you see from Gardiner are something i'd hate to trade and see him become.

I think the leafs need to get a center with similar potential back for Gardiner, thus leaving no other good piece/willing trade.

Is Kulikov available because of his upcoming salary increase? or is he not playing as expected? I dont understand why Florida would trade him

The point is that the Leafs have a surplus of LHD, so if they're scouting a LHD, they'd have to eb giving up at least a LHD in return to not make their situation worse (because at some point, we end up looking like a Pokémon game).

I would speculate that the Leafs could unload Gardiner (who the coach isn't 100% on) and another young LHD in the system (Finn or Percy) and smoshing them together to get an upgrade to the roster: Dmitry Kulikov, who plays a more Carlyle suited game than Gardiner.

Perhaps the Leafs ask FLA for a project player so it's a 2-for-2 deal, someone that the Leafs have heavily scouted and think there is legit potential at realizing on the talent, but still risky enough that Tallon doesn't feel he's getting ripped-off.

Perhaps Garrett Wilson or Phillippe Lefebvre, someone of that nature.

You're right, you couldn't possibly trade a young player for another young player.

Must have had quite the opportunity to view Toronto's prospects seeing as that you're all the way down south in Florida.

No team will trade a top prospect for Kulikov anyway. So what is Florida left with, if not a roster player? A couple of prospects with top six potential and a high draft pick. All of which the Leafs have.

Montreal would, not sure why you wouldn't think no team would make that trade. I'm sure half of the NHL teams would consider it, if not add to it.

The option of not trading him at all?

Well, if you dealt him for Gardiner, for instance, you're not exactly getting away from the rebuild.

I'm excited to find out which top prospects Montreal has in their system. It's certainly nothing that Toronto doesn't have.

I can't wait until Kulikov is traded to a team that people actually watch so that they see how utterly mediocre he is.

That's just trading for the sake of trading, for the Panthers at least. I don't know why the Leafs would want to do that trade.
