Curious plus-minus stats

me read lot of things about this stat .

But i went to Canadiens.com and realise that if we have a good season , most of our players are in the minus ;

Saku -3
Kovalev -8
Souray -8
Ryder -8
Samsonov -3
Plekanec -7
Latendresse -7

only our 3 th line players are in the + , and 2-3 d-men .

How could it be ?
does that mean that we need to change our lines to put 3 th liners on each lines ?

It means we do better on our special teams then 5 on 5

it means only our 3rd line can consistently produce 5 on 5 situations, while players from the 1st n 2nd line produce on the PP. Lines do need to be shuffled, but that's not news here.

Thank you !

Now we just have to wait to see if Higgins is going to help our 5 on 5 production .

It's a special teams league. 5-on-5 play is no longer as important as it once was. +/- is even more irrelevent then it used to be.

it shows that not only is the 2nd line not doing so well on the powerplay, but 1st has been fairly average. On the other hand, look at the 3rd line- 13 goals for and 3 against... I really don't see why they aren't played as often as Carbo can possibly play them at even strength.

We definitely need work on our 5 on 5 play. It just isn't acceptable to be below average in that department if we want to make a dent in the playoffs (if we get there at all).

I didn't realize this until this season (sadly) but special teams don't count against or for your +/-. That's why. Souray would be a +6 or some crap.

Special teams count if you're scored on in the PP or if you score when on the PK. So Higgins is at least a +3 because of the 3 short-handed goals he has; he might have been on for more but I'm not sure.

Obviously the +/- stat does not tell the whole story, but it's still a good one. That's why I love Komisarek, a +6 on a defensive unit that is heavily in the minus except for Markov (0), Streit (+1) and Bouillon (+3). Do you think he has a chance of pairing with O'Byrne next year considering they are both right-handed shots? I just want to see these two defensive machines that skate well destroy the opposition.

There is no way that he and O'Bryne will play in the same pairing, it's usually preferred to have a lefty playing with a righty D if one is available. Also, coaches usually prefer to play an offensive minded D with a defensive one so you will always have someone that can move the puck up the ice effectively (something that neither of those two are that effective at).

One interesting stat, since we're on the subject, is that in 74 min as the #1 PK pairing this season, Komisarek and Markov have been scored on only 2 times..... the same number of goals that Komi has scored shorthanded this season.
I say bring on the penalties!

almost correct. when you get scored on the PP, only the person who took the penalty gets a minus 1., and on the PK, only the players on the ice get a plus 1 if they score, the guy in the box stays at even.

???

The guy who is in the box does NOT get a minus if there is a goal scored while his team is short-handed.

+/- applies for players ON the ice for:
- Even-strenght goals.
- Short-handed goals.

Any even strength goal counts. 5 on 5, 4 on 4, 3 on 3 are all +/- eligible as per my understanding.
