Boyle mentors Schultz and Schultz takes over the top pairing in 2 years when he should be ready. Until then he stays bottom pairing and gets lots of PP time.
too much age to carry the load there for my liking. I wouldnt mind Phillips, but I'd like to see someone younger than Boyle, especially if we go after Phillips like you suggest.

I see Boyle as a 1 year stop gap for J Schultz. Ideally he can come in and help Schutlz grow his game to the point he's ready to take over. Then the top pairing will be Phillips-Schultz for two years and hopefully Nurse and Klefbom will be ready by the time Ference and Phillips are ready to retire.

I agree Boyle would be an upgrade on what we have, if he isn't too expensive I would not be upset about him in the roster.

Phillips could mentor our shutdown D, Smid would learn alot form him

I'd definitely take Boyle, not too keen on Phillips though. What differentiates between him and say a guy like Nick Schultz? Both aren't the quality of players they used to be IMO.

Boyle for 2 yrs at 11mil sounds fair.

Phillips can still skate and pass. Has a great breakout pass something both N.Schultz and Smid don't have.

Nikitin was playing with Belov for a few years back to KHL. They were a top pair on Avangard...

Healthy scratch this season means he'll be much cheaper than last year. Columbus has a lot of NHL capable defenseman. Not exactly amazing ones, but they're all capable right now.

Nikitin could be an amazing pickup for the Oilers right now. Maybe not this season, but a fullly adjusted Belov with Nikitin could make for a fantastic pairing.

So for everyone bashing Eakins' goalie moves, I guess it worked?

Any defense will look bad on Oilers while forwards play the way they play. Defense is a system which doesn't work if the whole team not playing it. Oilers' offense is terrible defense wise. They need a couple of good defensive forwards on top9. Or nothing will work.

Need a new backup plz.

Just looking at some stats...

Steve Mason, while he is 2-5 on the season, has a GAA of 2.17 and a sv% of .930. Not that I expect the Flyers to trade him, but maybe...

Might as well. Sign him to a one year deal and if he and Dubnyk stink up the joint then pick up a real goalie during the offseason.

My thought as well.

At one point I didn't think I really wanted him in the lockerroom, but who cares at this point? I mean, the guy is a nut case, that is pretty clear, but he doesn't seem to annoy teammates all that much at least.

He's worth a shot at this point since the season could be lost even earlier than in past years at this rate.

I don't know. I haven't heard anyone have anything good to say about him. He might be a cancer.

This might sound odd but maybe that's what we need.

At this point I've been very sour on bringing him in, but LaBarbera is just brutal.

I just can't see it being worse....as long as he can stop the puck.

I rather try Bachman first. It's not like Ilya went out a good starter in the NHL. Be different if like Thomas he actually played half decent when he last played.

LaBarbera is a poison.

That locker room will put up with a cancer if they give them average goaltending.

At this point, you have to have a fix the D and the goaltending. Doing one without the other seems.....lazy.

We're currently 30th in GA, giving up 10 more goals than the next side. Yeah our goaltending couldn't stop a beachball, but the lack of defensive coverage isn't helping.

That has as much to do with our forwards as it does our D men and goalies. Only a select few even have a competent two way game and the rest are liabilities.

I think coaching can take a little heat on this too....swarm defence
