We could have, but we don't really have a 30 goal scoring UFA-to be. Weird trade.

The Islanders giving up a lot for a player who has fewer goals over the past four seasons than the player they shipped out ... plus two high draft picks. High risk move by Snow.

Vanek would never re-sign here - the market, the style of play, the fact this team is not close to being a Cup contender, etc. I imagine he goes to Minny next season to take the 7.5 mill dollars Heatley is freeing up. So no way would or should Poile trade for a rental and give up assets for a team that most likely will miss the playoffs.

Also, even if Poile was looking to trade for Vanek, he doesn't have someone like Moulson to give up. Moulson is a 30-goal forward who also is UFA. That means in addition to the 2 picks Buffalo got for Vanek, they will be able to move Moulson at the trade deadline for a nice package as well. Buffalo made out great and I highly doubt Poile could have beat it without gutting the team.

Absolutely concur - if someone else didn't say it, I was going to.

I disagree we couldn't have put together a desirable package. It doesn't have to be 1 for 1 equal to the islanders trade.

However, now is not the time to be trading for UFA to be's. I know this isn't a popular opinion, but I believe we are very much in a rebuilding phase still so a move like this makes little sense for us.

What do you give up that doesn't hamstring the team?

Like I said, we're not in a position to be trading for UFA's to be. There are too many holes to fill before talking about rentals and deep playoff runs.

You miss my point then. ANY team can put together a desirable package. I am not saying that. The Isles traded picks and a good UFA forward for another good UFA forward. I guess they are gambling on Vanek being the missing piece of the puzzle for a Cup run or they think they can re-sign him.

Vanek is not the missing piece here to turn this team into a Cup contender. And he would not re-sign here. So while Poile COULD massively overpay for him, there was no good reason for him to do it at this moment in time.

Well, I don't think New York massively overpaid for Vanek. I think that's a solid deal for both sides.

Peter Forsberg...although I know that case doesn't suit the agenda.

I wondered if someone would bring that trade up. forsberg for up shall, parent, 1st and 3rd.

My comment was slightly tongue in cheek due to the general comments. Although, I do think it is telling who we tend to acquire

Overall, I like the trade for the Sabres. I'll miss Vanek, but the Sabres need a total rebuild and, as good as Vanek is, his time was up and Buffalo wasn't going anywhere with him (kinda like Nash and CBJ). I'm not a HUGE Moulson fan, but the return is good. I think he goes for a B-level prospect and pick at the deadline.

That wasn't the full trade though ... the trade was Peter Forsberg & 1st for Timonen, Upshall, Parent, Hartnell, 1st & 3rd ... Was it still worth it guys ?

Considering we were 5 days from losing Hartnell and Timonen for nothing via free agency, absolutely.

This is correct.

We didn't trade the players we traded their negotiating rights.

But strictly adhering to the reality of the situation doesn't do enough to make Poile look bad. And that's the objective here, right?

Using that logic, we traded a 7th round pick for Shea Weber.

you are smoking crack if you think he will get prison time for this, but he will still likely miss a chunk of the season.

havent some other famous goalies had similar issues?? Like maybe his coach??
