I think that when I'm watching half of the NHL.

There are defensemen in NCAA who can't hack it at a higher level because they aren't quite big enough, fast enough, or they don't have good hands, but they read plays and position themselves better than a lot of NHLers do. Other than that, I just have to shrug at the defense in basically every league.

Ditto... Positioning certainly has changed from what I was taught. Seems like forwards can just put a lawn chair in the crease nowadays too.

Lundström with a .928 sv% in 12 appearances now. He was great in an away win against Västerås the other night, stopping 27-of-29 as Västerås lost their first game at home this season 4-2. His team, Södertälje, aren't very good. Only 12 games in, but without Lundström they are flirting with the relegation spots instead of being 7 points clear.

Grachev is 2-3-5 in 14 games for Admiral Vladivostok. Only seen him play against SKA last week, scored an early goal in a 3-1 win but was pretty quiet.

A name from a few years ago... Nikolai Lemtyugov is playing for Sibir now. 3 goals in his 14 games (Lehterä is still PPG).

Going OT, Burmistrov is looking impressive in the KHL. Almost PPG and could force his way into Olympic consideration.

Vannelli is off to a great start with 4 goals and 4 assists in 8 games. I'm gonna try and watch some of his game tonight on hockeystreams and I'll give an opinion of how he looks.

He's a great skater, especially agile in the offensive zone and he definitely prefers to have the puck on his stick. I really liked his passing ability as well. Didn't see enough of his defensive game or shooting to make any judgments in those areas though.

Really excited about Vannelli. Here's to hoping one of him and Schmaltz pan out.

I'm guessing that BOTH will become NHL defencemen, at the very least as PP specialists and maybe 3rd pairing players, but with the possibility to be PP QBs and 2nd pairing stalwarts.

Great to see Vannelli playing so well to start the year. The Blues must love having so many options available for his development as well. If he continues his production for Medicine Hat, while also playing strong defense, Armstrong will have an interesting decision to make next summer.

Always been a big fan of letting players develop in the WHL. Hopefully, Armstrong lets him play there a few years. No need to rush him. He needs to get bigger and stronger regardless of the numbers he puts up ala Ty Rattie.

Vannelli will almost certainly play only two seasons in the WHL (this season and next season) as he played HS hockey and for the NTDP his first two years of WHL eligibility (his 16 and 17 yr old seasons). He could technically play a 3rd year in the Dub as a 20 yr old in 2015-16 but I seriously doubt the Blues choose that route as he will probably be deemed AHL ready 2 years from now. Very good to see Vannelli with a fast start with Medicine Hat. Both he and Schmaltz have the potential to be similar players to Shattenkirk. It all depends on how they develop and round out their games.

Speaking of Schmaltz, he's had a good start to the season as well. Very smooth and great decision making.

Schmaltz has played great so far in college. I hope we can maybe draft his younger brother this year; maybe he'll fall to us!

I'd agree that he'll need to put on some muscle before options open up, but it is always nice to have more options if a players development is going very well.

I understand that developing centres is important because it is difficult to trade for quality centres and they are so expensive in UFA. When it comes down to it, our system isn't "urgent".

Next summer we could end up with Backes, Berglund and Stastny/Roy looking like our long term centre depth. We might even add a very good centre prospect in a deal to make space for Jaškin in the NHL. Things can change quickly.

Every year is the same, if there is a very good centre prospect in the 10-20 range then I hope we try and move up. It isn't a disaster is we don't.

For how long it takes for hockey prospects to develop, you should always take best player available regardless of position. It would be nice to add a promising center, but if we don't believe there is a promising center when we are picking, then you shouldn't take a center just to take a center.

Daniel Audette of the Sherbrooke Phoenix could be a nice grab with our late first rounder or second rounder. On the small size at 5'8, 177 but is currently playing quite well, leading his team in scoring and has been in on 50% of their goals.

Was the 1st overall pick in the Q draft last year by Sherbrooke.

I was watching some clips of Jacob Doty....Boy is he going to have some fans. Wow! Flies around the ice and steps up for his teammates. Seemed to come out on top in nearly every battle too. Several one punch TKOs. Edit this...minus some guy named Josh Caron...yikes! He put a major beat down him.

So, Blues goalie prospect Nik Lundström narrowly avoided disaster last night. He plays for Södertälje in the Allsvenskan league (Swedish 2nd tier league) and during a scrum in front of the net the point of an opposing player's stick got caught in the cage of his mask, scratching his eye. Niklas is OK, though. In fact, even though he was bleeding after the scrum, he finished the game and got the W (7-1 against Rögle).

"I don't really know what happened. I just saw a stick coming at me and it touched my eye a little bit. It's not too bad. I guess it will hurt more tonight when it gets a little more swollen, but it's alright," Lundström said to Swedish hockey site hockeysverige.se.

Lundström has played 14 games for Södertälje so far this season. He has a GAA of 2.13 and a .921 sv%. He's the team's undisputed #1. He got asked about playing in the Allsvenskan compared to the SEL (which actually has been renamed to the Swedish Hockey League, the SHL), and didn't really think it was that much difference.
"I'm just here to do my part. Doesn't really matter where I play. All I can do is play my game, and then I get to see what chances I get to work with."

Awesome. I'm pretty high on Lundstrom. I think Lundstrom and Binnington will probably be as good of prospects as Bishop and Allen were for us a little while back. Maybe even better.

Congrats to MacEachern on his first college goal. Parayko continues to put up points picking up his 5th assist in 5 games. Carrier also with another goal. A bit concerned that Kurker and Gardiner have yet to put up any points. Anyone with any insight on their play otherwise?

In yesterday's game against Ilves from Tampere Lindbohm assisted the winning 3-2-goal at home five minutes before the end of regulation.

At the 2:27 mark: http://www.ruutu.fi/ohjelmat/sm-liig...ilves-26102013

If not available then I can describe that it was a nice backhand pass near the goal through a couple of Ilves-players across to Niklas Hagman, who came a bit from behind and scored an easy one on the half-empty net.

Vannelli now has 12 points in 12 games, 2nd to only Valk in points for Medicine Hat. Our 2nd round is turning out to be a steal with Carrier having 17 points in 15 games after a slowish start.

That's very encouraging to see. Hopefully those two pan out, because only having four picks in a draft is not really something I'd like to see.

Even Pochiro has 13 points in 15 games. His points are spread out and consistent, so it's not like he has some crazy couple outlier games either.

If Carrier and Vannelli develop and Pochiro becomes a Sobotka like player, a pest who can score decently, then this would become a really good draft despite only having 4 picks.
