It wasn't fans (at least what I was talking about), it was two of their reporters from the Tribune. My guess is they were happy that it is cool to like Talbot again. The one guy wrote an article about how Letang should be the Norris winner last year & then a few months later wrote another article about how he shouldn't get anymore than $6M because he's not an elite defensemen. That's the type of morons we're dealing with there.

Although another one of them from the other paper there did tweet that Downie was a good player & brought up how put he 6 points in 6 playoff games against the Pens when with Tampa a few years ago.

As for Pens fans being scared, I don't think they really care about this move or the ramifications of it. They just like trashing anything Flyers related much like we do with them.

Can't argue with this one. Now everyone in the top-9 firmly belongs there. Helps cover some of the offense lost in the JVR deal. Hall should be inserted as the 4C, forcing out Rosehill and leaving Rinaldo as the sole target of my ire.

Last time I felt the Flyers made a trade this lopsided was the acquisition of Ville Leino (and even that was a shot in the dark).

Only concern is Downies undisciplined play.

I like the trade value wise and Raffl has no business playing in the top-6 as of now but I'm scared of having Downie, Rinaldo and Rosehill dressed in the same game because it's only natural that there will be more penalties.

Downie's skill and willingness to compete were never an issue but he could go complete ape **** crazy out there. I haven't watched him much in recent years though.

Any team, much less Penguins fans, would actually be very excited to see Rinaldo-Hall-Downie line because that means the puck is about to go in our net.

And then there's:

Heard that one before. Rinaldo and Rosehill are useless players, and it appears to some that the only purpose that they presumably serve isn't being serviced. And then there's Hartnell, Simmonds, the Schenns, Coburn, Grossmann, etc. who are also pushovers, being paid pretty good not to be. Excellent roster management.

Again, the trade did not address the glaring need this team has at general manager. Even if this trade is a win for the Flyers, the returns will instantaneously be diminished.

Well he has matured significantly. I would agree that undisciplined play can be a concern with him but I think his knee injury (?) is the bigger concern.

Look, we all know Holmgren was looking for a Top 9 winger, it was clear when he tried to get Cleary. Holmgren moved a 4th liner for a Top 9 winger, as previously stated, the Top 9 (when healthy) is pretty clear, Berube may shuffle a bit to get things to work, but there really is no question now who the first 9 forwards will be.

Ha. Good call. I've been lurking for a day trying to find the right words for how pleased I am, but I can't find the words.

Team has been a little soft.

Yeh, I think the switch flicked for him at some point in Tampa, he became a far more sensible player then.

Heck, since 09-10 he has had had 2 league disciplines, the 'hit' (leg tangly thing) on Crosby in 09-10 when he was fined and for the hit vs Lovejoy in 11. (1 game suspension).

A lot of guys have far more.

Ofc he still takes penalties and plays very aggressively and agitates, but he is not wild anymore.

Solid along the wall and a good play maker. He gets a little more respect from the stripes than he did in his Philly days. Steve's a good fit right now.

Raffl would be better served in a bottom six role. Downie can play with G and Vinny.

I wonder if Raffl will be on the fourth line with Hall in the middle and Rinaldo at wing. It would be a speedy defensively sound players on the wing. Hall flanks in the middle as a defensive specialist.

There is a lot of people that think Downie is a goon. So many stupid people in this world. There is a another Sielski special basically saying as much.

I hope this guy enjoys his time, because he'll be making up stuff soon and I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Snider uses some muscle to force him out.

Basically, Downie isn't as good as Jagr. Seriously? A good playmaker/energy player isn't as good as a surefire hall of famer? Pshaw.

What a load of nonsense. Although having the Flyers' press going after Downie is better than them writing **** about Giroux, so maybe that's why Downie was brought in.

Everything I've seen posted here by that guy is absolute trash. I appreciate the whole "not being a company guy" thing but Jesus. He sucks.

You can not be a company guy and post facts. He does neither, again, he'll be on another beat eventually.

That's what I used to say about Timmy. However if he didn't have that job, he probably wouldn't be doing it... That dude seems like he doesn't even follow the sport, he just writes garbage to get a paycheck. If csn cared about the flyers they'd fire that bozo and replace him with someone who actually knows the sport, like Meltzer.

idk guys. I don't think Rinaldo is useless at all.

he's fine on the 4th line throwing massive hits on every shift.

After our hand-wringing about Talbot being misplaced on the 3rd line (I fully admit I was confident pre-season that he could play well with Couturier), it's a nice problem to have to figure out on which line -- even up to the 1st -- Downie will work best.

Now, if Holmgren can be as creative in improving the team D with a young PMD with first-pairing potential.

You forgot:
penalty-prone
careless
undisciplined (perfect fit for this team)

Hmm, the "distraction trade". I like your angle, Ms Charlie. It's almost a litmus test for Who Understands Hockey and the Flyers? Those who are stuck on "Downie is a goon who got a 20-game suspension in his first preseason" fail the test. However, the other extreme -- "Downie is exactly the power forward and grit this team needs. Problem solved!" are also off base. He's a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done by all of the front office, the coach and (especially) the players.
