Shaking things up is fine, but I don't see how replacing two players with two worse players helps us.

Exactly.

This Gus-for-Mez is a weak attempt at instilling the 'accountabilty' that Berube preached when he took over. If players were truly accountable, turnover-machines like Timonen and Coburn would not be continually rewarded with top pairing minutes - and Scott Hartnell would not be on the top line tonight.

Unfortunately the eight defensemen we have make up a pretty weak group.

At this point it's about who gives effort and who minimizes mistakes best since the whole team is crap.

Coburn is paired with Timonen.

Hartnell up to the first line.

Gill/Meszaros is the third pair.

Gus may well have been the D man who has played the best so far this year. (albeit in 6 games.)

Him and Streit have been ok in my book with Coburn and Schenn after them.

Kimmo and Mez have been the worst and Grossmann inbetween Coburn and Schenn and Kimmo and Mez.

Mez has played the easiest mins of any d man and blown the most.

Yea scratching coburn and timo and putting Hartnell on the fourth line would be a loud message to the team. I'm not sure how schenn gets scratched here.

Is Schenn seriously being scratched? That's ridiculous.

I guess schenn has a pretty healthy +\- Maybe he is playing worse than I observed. I think they best way to fix that is play him 25 min a night.

Good thing about the new cap is we can retain the max amount of timonens cap when we trade him. A team like the lsles would prob bite.

I'm sure, but probably not in a game like last night's, especially with such an egregious play like Emery's.

I thought I read that he was being escorted out of the arena last night.

Maybe Schenn asked for the night off so he could enjoy his birthday?

Since you asked...

March 9, 1972 -- Bill Flett stunned his former teammates in his return to LA as the Flyers won 5-3 in front of 6,618. Flett asked to be traded from the Kings because the home fans booed him often. The Kings led 2-1 with about nine minutes to play in the third period but Flett (3-1-4) and Bobby Clarke (2-3-5) each recorded four points in a span of 3:31. Flett, Clarke and Flett again scored within 40 seconds, the latter two 10 seconds apart, to give Philly a 4-2 lead. After the Kings' Ralph Backstrom cut the deficit to one, Flett completed his hat trick and thus became the first Flyers' player to score a hat trick in one period. Flett scored two PPGs in the third period, one four seconds into the PP and the other five seconds into the PP. Backstrom (2-1-3) and ex-Flyers Jim Johnson (1-1-2) and Bill Lesuk (0-2-2) combined for seven points in the third period. The three Kings plus Clarke and Flett had 15 of the 18 individual third period points. Philly led 1-0 after two periods. The teams combined for seven third period goals in a span of 14:09. Philly was 3-for-5 on PPs. Because Kings' owner Jack Kent Cooke was so disgusted with Flett's performance, he demanded that Flett not be made one of the three post-game stars. Afterwards, Bobby Clarke gave Flett a spittoon with an inscription that read "Unspeakable Star of the Game."

Accountability my arse. And Gus has played well in limited showings with quite tough minutes, him and Streit are the only two guys who can make a simple pass out of our zone, and Schenn has done fine.

Schenn has played fine this year. This scratch makes no sense.

Should be Timonen, if Berube wants to send a message.

Gustafsson has definitely looked good. He had one glaring misplay of the puck last night, but the whole defense has had those this season in much more crucial times. Out of anyone, I'd really like to see how he responds to playing 20+ minutes a night.

Schenn needs to work on his skating and needs to get some confidence with the puck because he's honestly not bad with it. You can just tell he's timid and hesitates nearly every time he has the puck, which results in flubbed passes or a rushed pass because he gets pressured by a forechecker. When he doesn't hesitate and actually starts skating, his passing is surprisingly good for a defenseman of his skillset.

What has Hartnell shown to get bumped up to the first line? Oh wait, there is no first line at the moment...

Yikes, that 3rd pairing will be the source of all lot of headaches tonight.

Good thing I'll be out again tonight & won't get a chance to watch this likely nightmare of a game.

I feel like Gus is the kind of guy we need in a cap era, developed by the team, not a stand out in any area but safe hands in all zones and has the skillset to be on the 2nd PP.

He is the kind of guy who we should have on the 3rd unit at a decent cost and can step into a 4 role and PP time... instead of 3.5+ for 5/6's.

I like how 95% of the time he is unnoticeable in his own zone, mainly because he usually gets a decent pass or clear round the boards before the forecheckers are on him, instead of fumbling the puck round for 5 seconds and getting the whole team trapped in the zone.

He will never probably be anything more than a decent puck moving 4 who can play a bit on the PP, but frankly him and Schenn as two of our 3/4/5 for the foreseeable future would be a good start on a D that needs an overhaul. (keep Streit as a 20-22 min PP specialist as a 'stop gap'.)

I guess one more chance for the Vets to redeem themselves?!
That has worked so well for us thus far.... Berube has lost it
