Thought this up on the caps board, will probably get a decent amount of hate from both fanbases

To Toronto - Laich + 4th

To Washington - Kulemin + Liles

Lets Toronto get out of the Liles contract, get a center to help with the current crunch, versatile player in Laich who can slide to the wing. Washington gets out of Laich's contract and if there's anyone Liles could thrive under it's Oates. Would ease the blow if Green is moved, and if not Alzner-Green/Liles-Carlson seems a decently rounded top 4.

Perhaps unbalanced but doesn't seem incredibly so, the 4th balances it all out

I know Laich's off to a bad start, but I'm pretty sure he's still worth more than an expiring contract and a guy we could've claimed off waivers a month ago.

Not seeing that working cap-wise for the Caps if I'm reading capgeek right.

Laich 4.5 versus around 6.6 for Kulemin/Liles

Kulemin might stay in WAS. Him and Grabo were buddies on the Leafs. They have good chemistry together as well.

Toronto wins this trade heavily. Just getting rid of Liles is a huge win for them. Washington would be dumb to take that.

For this type of trade to happen the leafs would likely need to retain 1 million dollars for Liles, and Liles at under 3 is affordable. Kulemin is a better player then Laich.

Yes he is, but Toronto is going to have to pay a lot more than the split between Laich and Kulemin to get rid of Liles. Liles is negative value. I think if Toronto threw in a 2nd or a 3rd + a prospect like Blacker, it would be more accurate but still I don't think that's enough for another team to take Liles. Retaining some cap would help also

Kulemin is already better than Laich, so how does Toronto need to add a high pick AND a prospect to bridge the gap of Liles "negative" value?

There are a million better options for the Leafs to look for as a stop gap C, and all of them cheaper than Laich.

In fact, I don't even think Kulemin is in this deal at all. 1 for 1, Liles for Laich, mediocre player for mediocre player, bad contract for bad contract.

Not really a great plan.

Get rid of Laich just to get another terrible contract. Sending Liles in the AHL would take $2.950m of their cap.

First, you have to assume at least 1M retained. Even so I do this if I'm Toronto right now with Bolland out.

How about this; what would it take to get Marcus Johansson to the Leafs?

They are getting a player in Kulemin as well who has shown great chemistry with Grabovski.

So the consensus is that Liles has gone full Kaberle? I thought Carlyle just gave him the Grabovski treatment and he can still be a serviceable 2nd pairing PMD. People thought Grabovski had become crap yet he's been excellent for us.

I'd do the Kulemin + Liles - 1.5 for Laich and a 3rd deal.

Buy me two large pizzas and you can have.

"Johansson with the take away, what a deke, loook at him flying down the ice...Johansson fans on the shot and falls down, sliding into the boards".

465465 times a game.

Guy is ****ing useless. I can't stand that he's still here and that some Caps fans still think he's top 2nd liner.

So we trade Kulemin for Laich + 3rd + 1.55 million in cap space (3.95M - 1.5M Retained - 900k If we left him buried)

Thats a tough one, if Toronto feels Kulemin is likely to walk then do this, if not then it becomes much tougher.

I think Washington wins this trade by getting Kulemin and a great deal on Liles who is a great 3rd pairing / PP specialist at only 2.45 million for a 3rd and an overpaid 3rd line center. But Toronto might need to do something with Bolland and Bozak out.

Kulemin would be good addition.

Worth taking Liles without Toronto retaining?

Not so much.

The way I look at it, is bad contract for bad contract. Laich's money and term are both worse. In the short term there is a need for a 2/3 center in Toronto and Laich would fit the bill. When Bolland and Bozak come back, he'd be a 3rd line winger who's being paid 4.5 mil for 4 years. Retaining salary seems wild to me in that scenario, as it would almost be like paying 6 mil for Laich for the next 3 years and 4.5 in the final season to fill a role the Leafs only need filled for a few months.

The ideal trade for me would be an upcoming UFA center, with a cheap salary for Liles plus a good stack of futures. (ex. Liles++ for Goc)

Really love Kulie but this isn't that bad of a deal for either team.

Laich would kill the Leafs cap long term. They'll have to give raises to a bunch of players in the next couple of years and Laich's 4.5 hit would be a killer. Phaneuf, Franson, Kadri, Gardiner, Kulemin, Bolland, Raymond...all of these guys probably won't be kept because of the lack of cap space. I would rather the Leafs just keep Liles in the minors (as brutal as that is for his career) and re-sign their own guys, not take aging overpaid players on just because they have a short term hole at centre.

Liles is the wrong kind of defenseman. Not a good partner for Carlson. If the Caps are going to play two puck movers in the same pair they might as well stick with Schmidt as opposed to taking on a crap contract while praying he can still play in the league. At least the kid is cheap.
