His worst hockey was before the injury though.

According to a study by hockey Jesus Jared Sexton, he's had stretches this bad in most of his NHL seasons.

It's the inevitable. Lundqvist came back from a slight rest, and has put in five rock solid performances in a row.

People who were doubting this guy were clueless. They were using a five game sample, a "what have you done for me lately," mentality to judge a man who has nearly 600 games under his belt as validation of his ability.

He's a top goaltender in the NHL, and he's showing us again why he has earned that title. It's looking more and more like the "nagging injury" although a convenient excuse, was actually the reason for his inconsistencies to start the year.

Did they ever say what his injury was or is it still undisclosed? The way management handled that was a bit curious.

His injury came after a huge win in LA where he played great.

His worst performances were the next two games.

Most NHL teams for the most part stopped giving out specific injury status. It used to be that way only in the playoffs, but now they do it in the regular season too. Probably do not want the other team to know an area of weakness and/or susceptibility to injury.

well his preseason and phx were not impressive at all. hank struggled i believe it was a combination of injury and the team starting to learn a new system.

they never said. Probably something like a groin pull.

I don't really care about pre-season performances because they could be due to a myriad of issues.

oh i agree just pointing out that he wasnt stellar before the injury, but that could have been because of the new coach

It also could have seriously been due to the pad adjustments. I'm not saying that's the only reason and I'm obviously not saying that he's only good because of the pads, but these guys train to know exactly how far they need to move to block things. It wouldn't stun me if the rule change meant an adjustment period.

If there's someone on the team that I am not concerned with, it's Lundqvist.

Slumps, soft goals, puck handling, high glove, whatever fault you have with him....

He's managed to be the most consistent goalie year in and year out since he's entered the league. He's given this team a chance to win far more than he's been the sole cause of a loss and he deserves the benefit of the doubt.

I look at the reaction here sometimes and I can only imagine how the other 29 fan bases feel about their goalie situation.

Start the Chad Johnson Era! Start the Cam Talbot Era! Trade him! I for one am not looking forward to the post-Lundqvist Era and I'm afraid anyone else that is is in for a rude awakening when that time does eventually come.

Wait. Wait. You mean to tell me that he can play well without big pads??

But I thought he sucks and is only good because of equipment.

if you take the first 4 games of the season out of the equation here are Henriks numbers:
4 wins
3 losses
2 shutouts

.947 SV%

And that was when he was injured plus the terrible play of the entire team.

Anyone else worried that the small pads will kill his game since he plays so deep into his net?
Sensationalism at it's best.

It took time to get used to the new system. We haven't given up more than 2 goals in 9 games. Plus, Hagelin and Kreider have given us more speed

Really nice that Hank can get a rest and we have Cam behind him who thus far has looked like a #1. Last few years I always cringed when I heard Biron was playing.

Hank is now 20 wins away from breaking Richter's franchise mark

EDIT: And hopefully Elias Sports Bureau doesn't screw this one up, like they did when Hank "passed" Eddie for second place (ESB said Eddie had 267 career wins as a Ranger, when in reality he had 266).

You may still ask this question.

I read in the paper that in the 11-12 season, and 12-13 season, Lundqvist was only pulled once in 105 starts. This season he's been pulled 3 times in 24 games.

On the NHL board they say Lundqvist is no longer elite...
They say he no longer cares, now that he has sealed a huge contract.

Did Sather just spend 60 million dollars on a falling goalie?

Add a new system and a new defensive system and no scoring to that and this is what happens. Hank hasnt been Hank but the Rangers havent been the Rangers either

Henrik is the one player on this team I am least worried about. I would hate to see him miss 30 wins this year, however.

This theory would hold more water if he was playing up to his capabilities before the extension.

Anyway, his overall numbers aren't bad. What's bad is his penchant for early goals and back-breaking softies. He never really had that problem before this year. He'll give up 2 or 3, make some great saves, but the 2nd or 3rd goal always seems to be in the middle of the third period and off a shot that most starters in the league would have no problem putting in the corner. For the money he's paid he NEEDS to make those saves.

I don't care what goalie on the planet is playing in net. Wide open, point blank scoring chances in the slot are hard to stop.

Sure yeah Hank's given up some soft ones, but the team's been mailing it in after going down by 1 since this preseason. That's not on Hank, can't fault him for this Euroleague system either.
