Idea: a minor rule change to fighting majors

With everyone complaining about the lack of room on the ice to show off the skill of the talented players in the NHL, and while obviously going to fulltime 4-on-4 hockey is too big of a change to be realistic, how about this:

4-on-4 during matching fighting majors.

It's not a huge change, and won't make any huge differences, but an extra five minutes of 4-on-4 every couple games or so would be fun to watch without changing the game significantly. Not occurring during a sudden death overtime situation where a mistake costs you a chance at an extra point might also mean players take more chances. And really, I've never fully understood why it isn't that way in the first place.

Thoughts?

At first glance, I like it.

I am not totally opposed, but I am scared to have more 4 on 4 because I think too much 4 on 4 isnt good.

This just means that crappy teams won't ever fight...ever. Totally kills the value of the enforcer.

This is a very bad idea.

Teams will try to fight just to get the 4 on 4.

Go back to the drawing board.

Exactly, thats why it was changed to 5 on 5 in the 1st place.
Any team thats losing is going to start a fight just to get a 4 on 4 so they have a better chance at scoring.

That's like saying that making crosschecking illegal would mean that bad teams won't crosscheck ever.

I think it would reduce fighting quite significantly, since only a few teams will benefit from it. I think skilled teams with good speed would love it though.

Most of the fighting today is agreed upon beforehand. It serves no purpose other than to have a fight (to show off the fighters etc). If a coach does not want to have his team fighting (to end up in a 4 vs 4), there will be no fighting. Goons aren't stupid. Most of them know exactly what they are doing and are very disciplined.
