Well, Ekblad is probably as strong prospect than Larsson was, and he was "expected" to go top 2. (I know the hype on Larsson was huge, and he seemed like he would re-invent the slicing of bread, but Ekblad has even higher pedigree, IMO).

And Reinhart may not be quite as purely gifted offensively as RNH or Huberdeau, but certainly as much or more pure skill as Lando and some of the intangibles. And then a lot of intriguing talent afterwards (Nylander, Draisaitl, Bennett, etc...). So probably a pretty apt comparison.

Although looking back on it now, 2011 seems a little top heavy. Will be interesting to see if there's a bit more depth by the time the second half of the 1st and 2nd rounds come along.

At the time of their draft vs how the current top guys look:

Reinhart is Jonathan Huberdeau or Alex Galchenyuk level but not RNH level.
Ekblad is Adam Larsson or Griffin Reinhart level but not Seth Jones level.
Nylander is Ryan Strome or Sean Monahan level but not Jonathan Drouin level.

There is no traditional #1 overall pick this year in terms of talent level/projection. There are also only two top 3 talents and only 3 top 5 talents. After that there is a regular amount of talent.

It's kind of like if you took the 2011 draft and plucked out RNH and Landeskog or the 2013 draft without Mackinnon and Jones.

PS: This isn't a knock on any player... it's just a "weak" draft for top end talent. And no I'm not one of those guys who says that every year.

Interesting that you chose Reinhart and not Murray. Any particular reason? First name to come to mind?

Adam Larsson was much more hyped than Griffin Reinhart.

To be perfectly honest, I know RNH has a ton of skill and COULD be the best player in his draft.... But so far I like Galchenyuk and Huberdeau more. I think they'll play a much more rounded game while putting up similar numbers.

It's going to be a down year in terms of talent. Not as bad as 1996 or 1999 but I don't think the 2014 draft class will be spoke of in the same breath as 2003 or 1979.

The top-end is weak compared to other years. Bad year to tank. But the depth in the 15-45 range seems pretty good.

Going into the season the top picks were: Couturier/Larsson (Reinhart/Ekblad), then RNH was a bit behind (Nylander), etc...I could go on and on with comparisons but this is not a strong top-end talent draft by any means. The 2011 draft (not in hindsight, but going into the season) is probably the most comparable. Before the season started there was no Jonathan Huberdeau.

This draft is a lot more forward heavy though (similar to 2012), there's probably only 3D going in the top 20 if the draft is done today (Ekblad, McKewon, Fleury). If you remove the top 4 picks it's kind of similar to 2012. I think Reinhart is fairly comparable to Monahan. I guess you could say Ekblad is a superior prospect to Nurse though (probably the 2nd best D from the 2012 draft behind Jones of course). Then you have Micahel Dal Colle as the high-end talent who could go anywhere in the top 10 likely (similar to Nichushkin).

Exactly how I feel. Having a first this year will still see you getting a pretty good prospect, but the difference between a top 10 pick and the rest of the first is pretty small.

Rienhart is as good as RNH was at the same time age imo.

I don't know how people possibly know the answer to this at this point of time.

I think it's a perfectly fine draft... but appears weak from being between 2013 and 2015, both of which were hyped due to certain players. On one end you have who was said to be "the next Crosby" in MacKinnon, then on the other you have Connor McDavid, who is arguably the top prospect since Crosby.

This year has plenty of fantastic players, but they just never reached that "elite prospect" status in terms of hype.

Ekblad is a seriously underappreciated prospect.

I think this draft will surpise people, and more players will emerge as the season goes on. The 2011 draft was said to be a weak draft, but actually was one of the better ones. I think 2010 is the weakest draft after 2007. I think 2014 is going to be a strong draft.

Honestly I think this draft is pretty underrated. It looks fairly good. and, of course, you never know until players make the NHL and start to perform.

it will get stronger throughout the year as it always does (in the minds of hf users) ... until of course it has passed and people are concentrating on 2015
