What I don't get is how Philly thinks this is at all the solution. But then again I was equally confused by the Streit/Vinny signings.
I remember reading on the Flyers board how Coutourier was significantly better than Stepan and that he would be putting up good offensive numbers any year now. Is he scoring this year? The Flyers are unwatchable.

Serious? dk. However, I am wondering if that is what they will offer. Brayden is still a valuable commodity.

the main question that needs to be asked is do we resign him for the $ hes gonna want and how long do we expect him to be effective. i say trade him and no resign as i think in a year or 2 his effectiveness is gonna drop of a cliff

I would trade Del Zotto before I deal Girardi. Girardi has turned his game around.

I was hoping McIlrath would be ready for this season and possibly show he can play big minutes. With that not happening, you have to pay Girardi. The UFA class for Dmen is awful.

What's the fascination with Eberle? Looking at his numbers, it looks like his more of a playmaker than scorer, and he's small. No thanks.

Yes you can, he is still 23, years old, is he not?
What was your excuse when he was 21 or 22?

His last 2 seasons point production:
41 points and 21 points in 48 games.
When Staal was injured, he filled in the top 4 and top 2 capably, so how did his value "undeniably" go down again?
You guys may want to visit the MDZ thread
http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/sh...7#post72693667
There is a good discussion. Don't forget to read a post there by Simon who did some actual research.

Second, just something to think on: Here are the 22 year old stat lines (or, if they had a better one at an earlier age, I went with that) of some of the better offensive d-men in the league. How many would you want kicked to the curb?

2-17-19
2-9-11
17-23-40
5-37-42
3-5-8
Not in the NHL
4-26-30
7-24-31
10-23-33
2-29-31

By the age of 22, Del Zotto had already put up TWO seasons better than most of these guys (9-28-37 and 10-31-41), all while drastically improving his defensive game, and getting yanked around with different partners (he's had some putrid ones) and being shoved to his off side.

The corresponding names to those 22 year old stat lines, by the way, are:

Brian Campbell
Zdeno Chara
Shea Weber
Alex Edler
Dan Boyle
Mark Streit
Keith Yandle
Ryan Suter
Kris Letang
Duncan Keith

I'm not saying MDZ is going to be as good or better than these guys. He might be, he might not be. The point is that you don't panic sell on a 23 year old defenseman who has already accomplished as much as he has. Aside from the elite of the elite, most defensemen need the time to develop. Moving DZ now only ensures that we had him during "development time" and some other team gets to benefit from his prime. It'd be Marc Savard all over again.

I don't think we are going to see the likes of Goligoski for Neal deal any time soon. Teams take notice of those deals and how they pan out and become very hesitant to be the next GM to make that same mistake.

No one wants to be the GM that gave up an annual 30 goal guy for a former offensive defenceman that has a hard time producing offence while being suspect defensively.

Neal since the trade has 62 goals - Goligoski has a total of 72 POINTS

I think GM's are hesitant to make THAT mistake again?

MDZ will have to be packaged with something else to get that kind of winger.

Not going to happen one for one.

Pencil McIlrath into the 1RD spot in his rookie year? He's not even being considered for a cup of coffee with the Rangers.

The only way I do that deal is if we have no intention of signing Danny G. Miller's complete game will not be that inferior to Eberle's in a couple of years. Eberle has elite offensive instincts and hands. However, he doesn't appear to help much in the D zone and he is not a leader. Miller isn't anywhere near the offensive player but he's a center that is tough and gritty and he will likely be a 40 point player.

So, the value doesn't seem right so, no.
