Just Curious What The Greatest Fans Of Hockey Think?
Maybe The Habs Are The Surprise Team. They Look Awesome!
But It Seems Like The Isles Are Shocking People.
I've always been a big fan of Ted Nolan, he coaches the right way and players tend to play hard for him, so I expected them to improve. However, I must say that after granting diprieto a 15 year contract, your GM has made some pretty good moves, specially in FA and the waiver wire. Nobody expected the habs to be challenging for top spot in the east, but nobody expected the Isles to be anywhere near the playoffs.
dotn get me wrong habs are awsome, better than i expected, and it is great!
but the isles?! i dont think anyone had them pegged as a playoff team, let alone anything better than bottom 5 in the conference. their turnaround is quite impresssive, and yet i still do not beleive it!
dont get me wrong, the Isles and Caps have surprised but most experts had montreal out of or battling for a playoff spot. We sit 5th in the entire league now. I know its a long way from being over but to be sitting 4th in the conferance..6 points ahead of 5th is far better then what most experts predicted.
Well the Isles are doing better than last year. They narrowly missed the playoffs last year, this year they sit in 7th spot but have the same amount of points as 8th and 9th. To me it's more of a natural progression than a surprised. Surprises last year were Carolina and Buffalo, because they didn't seem to have made that many huge changes and went from out of the playoffs to the top 4 of the conference. The real surprises for me are Atlanta and Washington in the east. I expected Atlanta to do better this year, but not that good. Washington, I wasn't even sure they would do any better than last year at all and right now, they are 8th.
For the Habs, I thought middle of the pack for playoff teams, soemthing like 4-5 in points, but they are 2nd in points, which is a little but pleasent surprise for us on this board. Then again, I expected a natural progression and so far got it.
In the western conference, the only team that is surprising me so far is Chicago since they dumped Yawney. But their play may still level off.
Keep in mind that the entire East is more tightly bunched this season. There are more contenders for playoff spots. Only Philadelphia and Florida seem out of it, and it isn't too late even for them. The biggest surprises for me are those on the negative side: The Rangers, Senators, and Lightning are doing a lot worse than I expected.
When I saw our farm system, who we got in the off season, and what we had going into the season. The only thing I could think to myself is, "this is the best team we've had in YEARS". I don't think it's too much of a surprise that Montreal is doing well this season. We've got the best GM in the league imo. Not only that, we have Rookie coaching by veteran hockey players who (in my mind at the time) knew how to coach via NHL experience. These guys (Carb, Muller) are team players.
Looking at all of this, inclusive of Kostitsyn Lapierre Latandresse etc, I knew the habs would definitely be guaranteed a playoff spot and a good year.
Another thing I had a good feeling about is Boston doing horribly, TO and OTT doing horrible just kind of came as a surprise. I don't think the habs were a surprise. Ottawa's failure was a surprise. Isles success was a surprise. Habs success imo was obvious. We have 4 SOLID lines. Even if our 4th line is being mixed up it's still decently good. When Lapierre is our center though, it's a SOLID line.
Halpern...the one player Gainey wanted this summer...
Zednik...in all honesty...you think that's an upgrade...did you watch him play last season...
ok zednik was obviously a joke on my part
im sorry you are right they lost halpren, he is a quality guy, but i think that gaining pothier and semin can offset halpren. still u expected washington to improve with ovechkin on their team, but i mean who the heck expects the islanders to do anything?!
