Roy retires in '03? Avs start to go downhill.

Roy returns as coach in '13? Avs go back to dynasty mode.

It's no coincidence.

Not as much as it seems. Even after saving cap by swapping Downie for Talbot, Avs still have a bunch of players to resign who are up for deserved raises, which includes but isn't limited to Varlamov and McGinn. Then they also have the Stastny and O'Reilly contracts up. And then Duchene and Landeskog who are already signed will get big bumps both next year

It's over. Good luck to the Avs going forward.

Next.
As a team that was last in the NHL in powerplay opportunities by 20 (a whopping 38 minutes less than anyone else in the league and 186 minutes less than Philedelphia) in 2010-2011, bottom 3 in 2011-2012, and that came into the game this season with the least # of powerplays in the league and still has the 2nd least # of powerplays and power play time after this game, that's a feeling the avalanche know well and is a rather ludicrous accusation.

I don't think there's any kind of bias or rigging from the refs, but if anyone has the right to feel that way it would be Colorado. They play a fast, skilled game and are 14-2 yet are bottom of the barrel as far as power plays go.

I did.....

90% of fans thought I was crazy too.

How do you not pick them?

Are they going to hold their own down the next several months? probably not but will they make the playoffs? IMO -yes...

1. The Avs were still good in '05, '06 and '07
2. This is far from dynasty mode

Avs were no longer contenders after the lock out. We were a bubble team at best and trending down.

I get where you are coming from but we had 3 straight seasons of 95 points.

I think people have been saying that since game 3. Thanks for making a huge contribution and point. Obviously NOBODY had any idea that their play is unsustainable.

Sorry can't resist. Obviously we know this. But for goodness sake people that say this make me laugh. Might it be possible, that they're actually a decent team?

Also surprising and impressive is Anaheim at 15-3-1.

Plus we suck on PP's. I'm ok with not getting them. I'm almost positive we prefer ES?

Unsustainable, not built for playoffs, wasting all of their winning energy too early in the season, etc.

There's no way a team that starts a season 14-2 could possibly compete for the Cup, let alone make the playoffs, let alone wins another game, etc.

The Avs are just a bunch of.......early peakers.

So what changes bumped up the Avs from 29th to 2nd place?

MacKinnon, Roy??

Is that it? Coaching helps that much or are the Avs overachieving?

Same players as last year too...

Oilers should take notes.

Feels like every team in the West is doing well minus the Oilers. We can all thank the LEastern Conference for that. The #1 team in the East would be tied at 6-8 in the West.

I think a lot of it is having a good system in place. Goalies and offense were mostly there. D was kinda there (still isn't really there haha).

All Avs fans will tell you the D has issues.

The Coach and System is getting the most out of the players. They work hard, skate hard and play smart. They also capitalize on chances on rushes, and bury them frequently. They've had two pretty bad games defensively lately. CGY and NSH. But they won one, and still put up 4 during the other.

I'd say they're probably winning a few they don't deserve. But good teams find ways to win games. Sore losers blame it on the others.

The whole team mentality is "Why Not Us?". They've bought into the system and play hard for it. They have the confidence they can win every game. And so far they've only come out on the wrong side twice. They've won a game about each way possible (other than a SO).

There will be rough nights, and bad stretches, but this team and system work. Everyone trying to disprove it since game 1 have been proven wrong. It won't work all the time obviously. But they're 14-2. If they continue like this for another 6-8 games what are the reasons behind their success at that point? If they lose 2-3 in a row the whole board is going to come down on them falling back to earth.

Gotta love this place.

One years older, one year more experenced, could be a factor for development to younger players sometimes. But yeah Oilers should take notes.

They're still at like 20% on powerplays, that's not bad.

Landeskog and Duchene would be a dream to have on 1 team and the avs have both, then they have ****ing Mackinnon lol. Also O'reilly and Stastny.

It's depressing, im glad they are playing so well though. Duchene is the most exciting player in the NHL this year

I guess, in the next 8 days we'll find out how good this team really is. The first games against the Blues and Hawks will finally be played. Those games and the ones against the Wild are the ones that really count.
