I definitely spoke out about moving the third rounder since they could have signed Mason in the summer without trading the pick (he was likely not going to re-sign as Bob's backup). I also would have criticized his signing, had they done so without the trade.

Maybe they wanted to give him a seven game try out, but I'm still not sure that those games really made a difference.

He has definitely been the only pleasant surprise of the early season.

Well we did give them Leighton too, I think that's what most people were clamoring about.

Mason has been the MVP so far this season. I would love nothing more than to see a whole career of this version of Steve Mason.

He has the tools, so its not like he has to play above expectations. This is what Mason was expected to be.

Well duh! Haha. Me too.

I always thought something was off after his Calder season in Columbus. Dude has all the tools. Can't fault Columbus in trading him seeing what they had in Bob, but man I don't know how you can give up on a guy that showed his promise.

Its easy when they saw Bob do what he's doing, this year he hasn't been awful, but mediocre at best and he's getting 5.6M this year.

However, Bob can take over a month and put up a 1.25 and .980 at anytime.

He really does look like a whole new goaltender from when he was in Columbus. I kept telling my dad I felt he was going to have a good season here with us (yes Im aware the season is far from over). Of course he laughed... like a lot of people would. It's also really awesome to have a goalie who is great handling the puck. He may be better than half the skaters on our team

The only qualm I have is the amount of rebounds he gives up, though he does seem to be able to direct them to the corner more than he does the slot.

Yeah Mason's rebounds can be pretty juicy at times but he's been able to recover. However, he's going to need to fine tune that. I could see it being exploited in a playoff series if we ever get back to playoffs of course...

If we make the playoffs this season he might be a Vezina candidate.

I'm still waiting for the genuine stinker. He had a poor SV% against Washington but wasn't really to blame. He let in a soft goal in Carolina but bounced back incredibly well.

He's going to have a genuinely bad game one day soon. It's all about how reacts when that happens. If he bounces back from it, i'm in.

I think Washington was as bad as it gets.

Well he sucked against Washington and in his next start he gave up 2 goals (1 in OT) and had a .947 SV %.

Washington was a bad team game, Mason's problem seems to be rebound ability. It's been mentioned though that he has directed them well, and I personally think I've seen an improvement in every game so far in that dept.

Give it to the mid season, if come game #41 rolls around and he's still sporting a 2.20 GAA and .930 SV % (or close), Holmgren locks him up for a few years.

I hope Mason keeps it up because not only do the flyers have a good goalie they can slowly bring Stolarz up and not rush him.

This, I think Stolarz is our goalie of the future, but it wouldn't be a bad thing to have Mason for another 4-5 years.

I hope if we do extend him, it isn't for a huge contract and he doesn't get lazy after receiving his payday

3 years 10 million would be fair if he keeps up these numbers all season imo

Mason's play has made me a believer. Seems even the ones he gives up, he almost has.
Nice to see that. Don't remember how long it's been. I think he fits in nicely with the core too and if the rest of the team can get it together, it'll be a great group to watch for the next few years.

I know what you mean, the goal vs Carolina he had in/on his glove, but it was just from too close a range/too hard a shot to snag.

He has and always had has all of the skill and ability, so hopefully his performance since joining the flyers continues infinitely.

19 games with the Flyers now and he has a .932 SV% and 2.19 GAA. That is the best of any goalie who played more than 20minutes for the Flyers.

Seems like in practice he is honed in as well..if the reports are accurate. That is always a good sign and we saw that with Bob (body or work) and not with Bryz.

Mason apparently has a good relationship with Jeff Reese.

Flyers goalies tend to have a good first season in the city, then it's followed up with mediocrity

That scares me
