Buffalo vs. Atlanta Jan.20/ 04

GAME: Buffalo Sabres (18-23-5-1) at Atlanta Thrashers (20-21-4-2).

TIME: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. EST.
The Buffalo Sabres look to end their five-game road winless streak, while the Atlanta Thrashers try to avoid a fourth straight loss at home when the teams meet at Philips Arena.

Buffalo is 0-4-1 in its last five contests away from home, with its last road win coming against the Washington Capitals on Dec. 27. Atlanta, meanwhile, has dropped three in a row on home ice since a win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Dec. 26.

The Sabres began a five-game road trip on Saturday and fell 4-2 to the New York Islanders for their third loss in four games.

Buffalo fell behind 2-0 just 5:27 into the game as New York scored twice on the power play. The Islanders added another power-play goal in the second period.

"That dug us a hole right off the bat," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. "Our skills guys -- I didn't like our emotion or work ethic on our power play. You have to tell me where Miroslav Satan was tonight. You have to tell me where Curtis Brown was tonight. Five-on-five, we were pretty decent. We still have a lot of work to do, and that's what ticks me off."

The Sabres conclude their trip with visits to Boston, Philadelphia and Carolina.

Atlanta broke out of its slump on Sunday, beating Carolina 5-2 to snap a nine-game winless skid (0-7-1-1) that dropped it from the top spot in the Southeast Division.

Randy Robitaille scored two power-play goals off assists from Ilya Kovalchuk as the Thrashers won for the first time since beating Tampa Bay 3-1 on Dec. 26.

"To us, it's the playoffs," Atlanta coach Bob Hartley said. "We can already say there's going to be a 10- or 11-team race for that final playoff spot. Two points is huge."

Atlanta is 5-2-1 all-time at home against Buffalo, including a pair of victories at Philips Arena last season.

Atlanta will win, and Don Luce and the Sabres can start preparing for the 2004 entry draft.

This team never plays well against Atlanta. Yet, tonight I have an oddly good feeling about the team's chances.

4-1 atlanta (drury)

I hope Ruff gives the start to Norenen again. Biron is horrible vs. the Thrashers.

I'm getting a little tired of Peters little fake dropping the gloves move. He's done it like three times. I mean I could see that if your someone like Avery, or Cooke, but he's 6'4 and a good fighter. He woulda smoked Grand Pierre, instead they got matching minors. Just go out there hit people and when its warranted fight someone.

I wanted to see Peters rock him, but I think Peters knows he's going to get called upon later in the game to get physical. Perhaps he didn't want to waste his energy early? Or he was trying to get the penalty again, hoping Ruff realizes how "smart" he is and keeps playing him. I do, however, guarentee he goes with at least Lessard tonight. It's possible he gets another fight or two as well if this game keeps heating up in intensity.

GREAT JOB ALES!

Get the **** out of the lineup.Bring up Bartovic or Pominville again over this bum.He is a waste.12 games without scoring, and you can't say he's still young, he's already 25.Typical selfish hot-dog type play.

That was atrocious on Kotalik's part. It's almost as bad as listening to Bush's State of the Union Address.

epitome of afinogenov's career
between the legs pass when hes the last man back, AFTER watching kotalik's mistake earlier
at least kotalik plays physical
i don't care how exciting max is, he is the exact same player he was when he made the roster a few years back

I dont understand why these refs feel the need to have to interfer in everygame, if you ask me what would make this game better it would be not having them decide the game. look at these penalty calls you tell me its not lopsided. and kotalik better be benched next game, we put him in instead of roy....... they are playing like they have all the skills in the world what happend to just keeping it simple thats what wins us games??? someone tell me where drury is the only time i ever hear his name in recent games has been when he penalty kills, its time he starts showing up and leading by example.

that first goal was on drury's head
tried a centering pass on the pk that lead a 4-2 rush
shoulda dumped in behind the boards and went back on D
bad decision on his part

Why is everyone so upset? This was classic, predictable Sabres hockey. Nothing's going to change until the deadweight gets shipped out. Until then, sit back and humor yourselves.

And there is a lot of organizational deadwood to trim, on the ice and in the front office...
