Maybe I'm reading it wrong but is someone in the Zibinjad (sp?) vs Couturier thread actually arguing that Couturier is inferior defensively?

Him, Nielsen, Grabner, Eberle, Higgins, Dupuis and Sutter are a cut above (though Read, Staal, Cooke and Korpikoski are close to those guys.) everyone else. And non of those other guys have to do half as much PKing as Couts.

He is also among the top 25~ guys in FO% so far this season as well. (I have him at 23 for guys with over 200 taken, which is around 80 guys.)

Him, Eller, Andersson and Johanson are the only guys under 25 in the league with good faceoff figures.

So overall after last year being arguably top 10 defensively among NHL forwards, first year being very impressive, and this year seemingly climbing into the top 5 and one of the most versatile defensively (in terms of being top ten in both EV and PK.)... pretty damn impressive for a guy his age.

If he can put up 50 points regularly while maintaining his defensive play he should win Selkes. (though tbh since the lockout the Selke IMO has become a bit of a joke.)

I quoted some of this in the never ending Couturier vs Zibanajed thread. I gave you total credit. I hope this is ok.

No worries, if I can be any help in convincing one person Couts is a pretty good player I am happy! The guys at behind the net should get the credit though... that is an awesome tool! All I did was put in a few qualifiers for QoC and Corsi etc.

Ottawa fans decided that, instead of singing the praises of Zibanejad, they would run a smear campaign against Couturier. Much of what they post about him is just flat out wrong. Whatever makes them feel better about their guy, I guess.

I read the thread, wish I hadn't. I don't care if Zibenajad is better or isn't better, that thread is full of garbage.

Yeh, are they not the fanbase that is seemingly attempting to run their best forward, and one of the best set up men in the NHL, out of town?

He's this great defensively at 20 years old. I can't imagine when he's a full grown man.

Couts I think should be up there with Giroux and Mason as an untraceable asset.

I've had Couturier just about on Giroux's level in terms of importance for a while now, as I think I've made obvious around here.

He's starting to do all the right things offensively, too. Points will come.

I gotta say, we're pretty spoiled when it comes to him shutting down elite players like Malkin, Crosby ect. I just come to expect it now.

I think this is a common sentiment among the fans. Especially those who keep throwing him into proposed trades. They take for granted how well he plays against top players in the world.

What I like this year especially over the last few games is what he's doing in the offensive end. He's moving more and taking more shots. He's creating opportunities and looks like he should start getting some points very soon.

Couts did everything today...double shifted and was out there grinding away time for the win. In the last minute, he had Crosby locked down. There was no way Crosby was going to get a stick on anything. Beastly performance.

Pretty much this. there are about 5 players on the planet I would trade him for. honestly, I think he's going to be a better player than schenn, who really doesn't impress me. Couturiers skating woes are wildly overblown.

I don't think we'll ever get fair value for this guy in a trade so we need to definitely keep him. He has really high potential and it seems like that or bust as far as offense goes at the moment. Either way it's not something worth trading. Plus he's the type of player fans should love very easily.

He should be a priority to keep around. I can't wait to see his development continue.

Love watching him get into their heads. I can just imagine Malkin at a shrink's office with his head in his hands. You can see how much Couturier frustrates him.

I'd still trade coot for a 1st overall pick or a top D prospect

Couts is the kind of guy who will go under appreciated until he is asked to play more an offensive role. Until then only the real fans understand just how good he is. I was thrilled the day we drafted him and will continue to be thrilled even if Scheif scores 50 a year. That kind of player has to be offensive to be effective and Couts does not.

Quoted for truth, and agreement.

No way the Flyers win most of the games they did this year without a defensive forward of his caliber on the ice. It seems like his offensive game is just a matter of confidence and being restricted by his role on the team. Couts gets the puck on his stick in an offensive situation and it almost seems as if he lags mentally for a moment in order to switch from his dominant role (d assignments) to an offensive mindset.

I might be wrong, but his defensive game looks natural and instinctive while his offensive game looks like he's over thinking... Anyone who wants to trade him is ridiculous, IMO.
