I never said that Samsonov would be enought ; i said Samsonov + another player+ draft choice .
What i am saying finally is that we are in a position where we could overpay for a such promising player , because we need too make room for other players , and because Brassard could be the first center of the Habs for the years to come .
considering that , i would be willing to give Samsonov and Ryder for him , because we would be a better team in the long run ,with Brassard + Kostytsin , than with Samsonov + Ryder . Not only Brassard is more skilled than Ryder , but he would made better his wingers .
May be we wouldn't be better this season , but we would for the years to come .
So the Jackets would take near 6M$ in salary for two players who lacks of consistency (and a pick) for one of their top prospects for years to come. With Sammy and Ryder, I'm not even sure they would make the playoffs. Brassard is a great part of their future. Would you take Sammy and Ryder for Latendresse?
The fact is that we don't know if Kost is ready for the 2nd line so trading both Ryder and Samsonov would hurt us a lot.
I will continue to say it. Sammy need to be traded if a team feels they need him and they have the space for his salary. The only way I would trade Ryder is for a player who could help us this year and not in a couple years. We are not far from being contender now. We have a solid team so it's not the time to think about getting prospects unless it's to make a place for Lapierre.

you could also look at it that way ; Colombus will have 2 top 6 wingers comming from a good team, and a draft pick , for an unproven high selection draft player .

Yeah. Two top 6 players who lack of consistency.
Anyway, do you really think the Jackets would bite?
We need to try to find a solution in the team before making a big trade.
I know some of you will say that we shouldn't to that but IMO, the move to make right now is to trade Sergei Samsonov. If we can get a decent prospect and a mid-round pick for him, I'm all for it.
Their is a big debate on putting Higgins as the center and Carbo seems to keep Higgins on the 1st line with Koivu and Ryder since they have a great chemistry. However, I think that we would be a better team with those lines:
Latendresse-Koivu-Kovalev
***Lats played well with Koivu during Higgins injury and Kovy had great chemistry with captain K in the past. If Koivu could get some consistency from Kovy, Lats could get a lot of goals playing on that line.
Perezhogin-Higgins-Ryder
***Higgs would continue to play with Ryder. Perezhogin learn a lot by playing with Bonk and Johnson and I think he is ready to show what he can do on an offensive line. Ryder is not really responsible defensively but he would be the goalscorer on a line with two complete player with offensive talent.
Plekanec-Bonk-Johnson
***What a 3rd line it would be. Most teams would have headaches with those three. Pleks will probably be centering this line next year and IMO, the line would be even more dominant than with Perezhogin. Pleks place is on that line.
Bégin-Lapierre-Streit
***Lapierre has his place in the lineup and there's nothing more to say about it.
Murray and Downey would be there and there's always Kost that we could call-up if there's a problem.
The defense would stay the same.
I would at least try it but I like it a lot. The 2nd line would look much better like that than with Sammy, Pleks and Kovy.
The most interesting part is that we would be able to resign Souray during the offseason or another top d-man if he doesn't want to resign here.
Considering we trade Samsonov and that Niinima, Aebischer, Murray and one of Bonk or Johnson leave during the summer, we would save about 10,5M$. It would be difficult to let Johnson or Bonk walk but we'll need at least one spot next season. Kost will be there for sure and I expect Chipchura to push hard to have his place.
Then:
Andrei Markov: +about 3M$ (5M$)
Sheldon Souray: +about 2M$ (4,5M$)
Chris Higgins: +about 1,5M$ (2M$)
Michael Ryder: +about 1M$ (3,25M$)
Mike Komisarek: +about 1M$ (2M$)
Alexander Perezhogin: +about 500k (1,25M$)
Tomas Plekanec: +about 500k (1M$)
Craig Rivet: +some k (3M$)
Total: 10M$
Assuming the cap will increase by a couple millions, we would be ok...
I like this alot. Our 2nd line is weak, and a big reason is that Kovy and Samsonov are not complimentary players at all. Kovy needs Koivu; his production goes up by multiple factors with a talent like Koivu. I also feel like Ryder is a waste playing with Koivu.
Question however; why are you projecting all our RFA's to get those big raises? I see no reason to give Higgins, Ryder and Komisarek big increases. In a cap world, atheletes know you don't get paid big until you hit UFA. So give them minimal increases, dump Samsonov on anyone who will take him (I'd prefer a half-decent draft pick, maybe a 2nd if someone is dumb, as I'd rather stock our juniors since AHL-level is loaded already) and use the money to re-sign both Markov and Souray. If we have some left over (and hopefully we do) Bonk and Johnson would be great. Rivet can take 1 mil or walk imho.
But I like the pretext of your post; dump Samsonov, as it helps us rejuggle things to form a better 2nd line, while giving us much-needed cap room next year for our UFA's. It would also let us take on a one-year rental at the deadline to fill any holes at that time. (Injuries or whatever.)

Maybe I was giving too much for Perezhogin but for the others, I think they all deserve an increase.
We will be lucky to sign Higgins for 2M$ since he could ask more the way he's playing. If Ryder was able to get 2.2M$, I don't see why Higgins would not touch that kind of money.
IMO, Komi will get about 1.5M$ and maybe a bit more. Pleks will likely touch about 1M$.
It's not really big increases. It's just that those guys are key RFA IMO. If Ryder is part of the future, he will probably get about 3M$ for three years. I don't know if I want it to happen but Gainey will have to decide if he thinks that Ryder is part of the plan.
I think I might be very surprised to see Ryder with us next season. With the way Latendresse has played this year. And the developments of players like Kotstitsyn, Grabovski, Milroy, Lapierre and Chipchura. Ryder is also a very good asset in a trade, so I think he might be the odd man out.

Milroy? Do you really think he will make it someday?
