We need to be realistic here as fans. Montreal is the anti-destination in the NHL. All the negatives of being harassed by the media/fans combined with the negatives of making less money than every other city in the league. We have barely been a playoff team for the last 20 years and have driven every good player we've had out of town and have been attempting to do it to Price/Subban in the last few years. Then you add in the whole French thing and it complicates matters even more for players who have kids who need schooling/don't want to deal with racism. There's literally no positive about the team other than accomplishments in the past that would bring anyone here willingly for anything but a severe overpayment.
Ok ok... go cry in a corner somewhere else, goodnight
If you really think the fans never say ish about their team outside of Montreal then ur an idiot
Look at the UFA defenseman list. The top 20 cap hit guys or so will likely all be re-signed well before July 1st. Montreal is near the bottom of the league for desirable locations for UFAs. Highest taxes, by far the worst fans, no winning culture etc. Maybe Robidas would sign here, but is 37 year old Robidas at 4 mil an upgrade on Diaz?
Well then, might as well never reach out to UFA..Because we're such an undesirable place to play..
First of all, that's nothing more than an opinion, one I put very little importance on. Players will follow first and foremost, cash. That's why they hit the open market, it's to get the most cash. So, if you have enough of it, then you'll be in the running. After that it's up to you to persuade the player.
As for the list of guys available, well, that's the point of waiting. We are only 1 month into the season, what's the rush in signing Diaz? or Emelin for that matter?
PK Subban, I get it. Markov, I get it. You want to lock up your best players first, not last. I mean if you say there's a list of 20 guys that are set to be free agents but likely re-signed, that means they're still not extended, so if these guys aren't then why should Diaz be?
As of now, there's still quite a few interesting names, Girardi, Ericsson, Klesla, Greene, Mitchell, Robidas, Mitchell, and that's leaving out Orpik, Phaneuf, Boyle, Meszaros, Pitkanen..
So there is no rush to re-sign Raphael Diaz. This is also not considering the possibility of a trade or giving a spot to youngsters.
I don't have a problem with re-signing Diaz, I just don't agree with the timing.
Diaz has deficiencies but he's shown he could be helpful when paired with the right partner.
3x3 would be very reasonable for Diaz and unless we include a no-movement clause, also a contract that could be easily dealt for some help up front when Tinordi and Beaulieu mature into NHLers.
People need to take a chill pill. Not every contract signature will turn into Desharnais you know.
I think it's more people look at the dollar figure and don't realize the cap will likely be 90-100 million by the time Emelin is on the last year of his contract. Even when the cap is that high people will be complaining that a 3 mil cap hit hurts us as much as when the cap was 40 mil.
I remember Bergevin talking in the summer about how you don't need a big defence, he likes guys that can move the puck and skate, he pointed to the Hawks defence and how it wasn't big either.
When I heard that and saw how much they like using Daiz, guy has been playing top 4min since last year and top pk time, since Bergevin got here, not surprised they are going to re-sign him been tho I'd send him packing for a draft pick at the trade deadline.
Niklas Hjalmarsson 6'3" 220lbs
Nick Leddy 6'0" 200lbs
Johnny Oduya 6'0" 200lbs
Michal Rozsival 6'2" 210bs
Brent Seabrook 6'3" 227lbs
Duncan Keith 6'1 200lbs
Wow are you guys underestimating our players.. Diaz has been playing ****tons of PK time, and we have one of the best PK in the league right? And that guy can very well play on a 2nd wave PP as well??
Guy's probably worth a good 4-5M$ as a UFA, whatever we sign him for that's under these figures I'd be way happy. Worst case you trade him, he's definitely worth something on the market right now.
PK Subban 6'0" 217lbs
Andrei Markov 6'0" 201lbs
Alexei Emelin 6'2" 224lbs
Josh Gorges 6'1" 201lbs
Rafael Diaz 5'11" 197lbs
Douglass Murray 6'3" 240lbs
Francis Bouillon 5'8" 196lbs
And we have Tinordi coming up too.
It's easy to make it look bad when you play that much with the numbers. Comparatively, however, we are bigger than the Chicago Blackhawks are on defense and will get even bigger with Tinordi. If as a group they learn to move the puck more consistently we have a very good defense for years to come. (especially with the prospect relief on the way)
It's not that Diaz isn't a useful defenseman, it's just that with the Habs composition of defensive core, he's redundant... They are full of small, soft, puck moving guys... They are lacking lacking size and grit and you need that mixture.
So far the Habs have Gorges and Emelin signed for next year. Sources indicate that negotiations with Subban, Markov and Diaz are underway. Subban will command 7.5-8 million, Markov 5 (minimum) and now Diaz... That means you basically have one spot open for a big crease clearing tough defenseman.
Is that guy Tinordi? If not, what happens to Tinordi and Beaulieu and Pateryn? They're basically all ready, and they aren't going to wait years for their time.
