I came on to post this . But we all have to remember these players that were waived may not have turned out if the were not waived . Sometime players think the can make it with their skill alone and not work on their game . A good kick in the butt may have help these players take a serious look at themselves and got them to work that much harder .

Nashville could have taken an unprotected Milan Hejduk in the 1998 expansion draft as well. He wasn't picked up, so he put up 48 points as a rookie in 1998-99, then 36 goals, then 41 goals...

Grant Clitsome for the Jets. He was waived by the Jackets and has since flourished playing on the Jets second pairing with Buff, he hasn't looked out of place either which is nice to see.

Burke and his stupid "handshake agreement" to get rid of him because he wouldn't let him start

Of course, when you announce to the league that you have to move him ASAP, the law of leverage means you won't get much.

I don't think the Hawks really care how well Stanton is playing right now. He isn't in the same league as the names being mentioned in this thread. They are not worse off without him.

Depends. I don't see MSL as a guy who mailed in it in but rather someone who needed time to develop. The other drawback was his size. If you're not a productive AND you're small, teams won't take much of a chance on you.

Contrast that to say, Henrik Sedin who also scored very few points in his first two seasons but obviously stuck with the team and developed into the elite player he is today.

Clearly MSL

But Nabokov for the Isles last year played well, not as good this year

Hainsey had to pass through waivers to be sent down by Montreal. He was claimed by Columbus, and had a decent year for them. Starting with his first full season in Columbus he put up three 30+ point seasons between Columbus and Atlanta (signed as a UFA).

Anderson was put on waivers (and claimed) 3 times between Jan 19 2006 and Feb 3rd 2006. Was traded to Florida late in 2006. Spent just over 2 years as a backup to Vokoun in Florida, then signed as a UFA in Colorado and put up 38 wins in 09.

Peverley for Nashville I always liked him
It was funny. Just after that happened, my boss was in Nashville watching for a Preds game (family friends with the Tootoo's), and Jordin commented that Peverly was one of the most skilled players he's seen, and to keep an eye on him. He was almost a PPG player in Atlanta right afterwards, and put up 20G and 50+ points the following season.

I'm sure any team and its fanbase would be pissed off when you literally give away a good prospect for free.

Thomas Hickey has been a very effective defenceman for the Islanders after LA waived him.

Trading for Lubo and claiming Hickey is a very underrated part of their turnaround.

This one stands out for me. Wasn't waived, but is one of the best instances of a player given away that went on to be a core piece for a winning team for many years.

Huselius was waived by Florida but no team claimed him. He was then traded to the Flames by Keenan. Keenan later followed Huselius to Calgary and kicked him off that team too.
