Saving face is one of the worst human characteristics, on par with lying.

If Bergy wants to act like a 'politician' from China, good luck with that.

Good leaders admit mistakes and move on. The NHL is a war, with no time for pansy politics. Man up Bergy.

Always comes down to morals, every time...

Brière is only a stopgap, to add some offense in the regular season, and momentum in the playoffs (if we make it there). Last year was a fluke, look at the way we finished. Now, drop the kids line and Subban/Markov/Price, what do we have ? A probable bottom feeder.

To some extent, I'm pretty sure Bergevin doesn't panic, and that in fact, that's something he had planned. See, that's why we can't have a proper rebuild here, people ALWAYS PANIC whenever something goes wrong. Imagine we trade Gionta (NTC I know, 'imagine' is important here), Plekanec (would hate that, but well... ), DD (major ), Brière (), Gorges (yup), Bouillon (major ), etc., basically all our vets (and junk) for picks and prospects, and we play some Hamilton kids instead... we drop fast in the rankings, but here, at least, we know we're tanking and we rebuild (even though some will still panic, but those must be insecure in their lives, poor things). Now, the basic fan don't know what's happening, you tell them, but they don't understand, they want to win, otherwise it sucks. Whatever. But, they buy less and less Habs stuff, they even think about not buying tickets for a game they were supposed to ! Drama ! Less and less $$$ for Molson, more stupid melodramatic stuff from supposed hockey analysts and pseudo-journalists, basic fans believe those said idiots, then buys less and less, and that spiral of 'doom' goes on...

See, I've hated DD contract since the beginning, I don't like Brière (even though I understand the purpose), I don't like Bouillon (well it's not really his fault, he's overused, see next point), and I really don't like Therrien. He's doing the same antics that had him fired the first time, and fired from Pittsburgh... even though I'm a fan, and I love when we win, somehow, I hope Therrien lose the team, and that we hire Laviolette or Boucher (ultra-defensive, I know, but he knows some of the kids here from coaching them in Hamilton, would help), and I hope people stop thinking we have a great team. We don't.

Major moves ? Those will happen if we continue to lose only. Seems we can't even do a minor move by trading DD... (the Cole-Ryder/3rd was pretty good, management wise, though...)

UH. Because we have Price, Subby, Max entering prime right now, and studs like Chuckie and Gally who are legit cup contender players already, and Markov as a fantastic general in the window the next three years tops, and Pleks losing it with 2 good years left, and Tinordi and Bealieu/Nygren ready to be effective window rookies next year,

and any player we draft from now on out of top ten will not play for Habs for the next 4 years?

FFS. Jeezus. There is no more 'building through draft'. Not finishing 8th there isn't. Bergy has to start making moves with this core right now.

(BSL makes his 1100th post saying the same thing, no one gets it except, ironically, all the guys who have stopped asking for tank, including me. )

If you say that Habs will never win a cup with Subby and Price, fine, we can build through draft. I have no problem with that. Are you saying that? Yes or no? If no, then Bergy has to go for it, starting at the deadline, by trading useless vets for quality youth. Not picks. NHL ready youth.

I know Plek's is a consistent point geter but I think we need to make room for some fresh taken. I obviously think Desharnais' contract was a big mistake. From what I'm seeing from the team this year, it look alike we're in for a long season unless some major moves are made. How sweet would another top round pic look alongside Galchenyuk, Gallagher, and Eller?
Plekanec is still young enough to hang onto and we need at least two working lines. I would be reluctant to deal him now.

Markov on the other hand makes a lot more sense if you want fresh young talent.

This.

That contract HAS to get done. And if MB ****s that one up he needs to be shown the door. There's no way we should be screwing around with this. Sign the guy and be done with it.

God forbid MB trade any of these guys or every single spastic hab fan would piss their pants, cry, and riot.

Ill welcome bigger moves in about 2 years. No sense making any bold moves now. It's only year two of the rebuild.
Moving Markov makes sense.

Don't touch the younger guys...

I could see him re-signing a player or two before the season ends. But I don't really expect any big moves until the off-season.

The Habs are much more than a trade or 2 away from being contenders. I am certainly not one of those guys who wants them to tank. but I dont want them to sell futures just to make the playoffs just to get smoked in the first round.

If a deal is there to be made, and it makes them better now and better for the next 4-5 years, then sign me up. However if it is a panic move cause the team isnt playing well right now, no thanks...

Plus you have to consider that they are right up against the cap so unless the other team is willing to take some dead weight, trades arent likely this season.....

I don't see Bergevin making a move, I think it's a 5 year plan with him, this is technically only the first full season and I also think that Montreal is going to continue to build around youth, the current core under the age of 28 and draft picks.

Price, Subban, Pacioretty, Gallagher, Galchenyuk, theses pieces will still be there and still at a very very high level of play (better than right now for some) in 4-5 years from now. This is the "core" you want to build around. Forget Plekanec, and expecting/forcing Beaulieu/Tinordi to be good NHL player on the short term would be suicide for their development.

This team, right now, isn't close to being good enough to win the cup. It needs way better depth both on offense and defence, and pure scorers. You don't get that by trading during a season, not all of that.

It' s a old but tried and true way to build a great team, having good veterans with solid defensive skills (Two-way players to teach the good habits). Without that mix for the younger players to learn from, they get lost no matter how intense the competitor. The Habs now have all of the pieces back in their lineup and can actually begin molding the team envisioned during the summer.

What fans need to know besides the length of periods, penalties, positions etc.(Basics, elementary hockey) Is to know the system leading players, coaches, GM's etc. to the eventual professionals they become. That doesn't mean to be a fan, you must learn but it surely will give fans, a better perspective as to the sum of work involved, for each individual's job on our team.

Without having such a deep understanding (Studies, involving knowing the workings of each league CHL/all junior world, minor pro world, Pro leagues World.) wondering why our Habs aren't the cream of hockey as they were for 25% of the 1st century of hockey. This may help, the NHL is a business first and the Habs have been the instrument that was the foundation to build hockey into a world sport. Much of this to the chagrin of knowledgeable fans of the sport, the respect that should be accorded our franchise has been bought by others without due diligence to it's greatest supporters the Hab fans.

Finally the Molson's are bringing back some of that history and the astute hockey minds necessary to build our team into one that is deserving the title "The Montreal Canadiens". With Serge Savard holding the job of hiring a truly hard working knowledgeable hockey mind in Marc Bergevin. Now Bergevin has instituted a veritable mindtrust of hockey genius as his team the Habs will become Champions again in my lifetime, something I thought was a lost dream. Go Bergevin Go!

Good text I found (in french)! I think that he should clearly stick to his plan. When you try to go too fast you make mistakes like Garth Snow did by acquiring Vanek.

I wish we got in on the Bobby Ryan sweepstakes. We had expendable picks and could have parted with a guy like Eller. It would be a bit risky if we couldn't lock him up long-term, but Ryan is a legit top notch goal scorer... something we seriously lack.

I haven't read the article yet, but I don't think trading for Vanek was a bad move by Snow. Isles have a deep prospect pool and a pretty young team. At this point, they're getting to end of the rebuild and are starting to get into a win now phase so a mid-1st round pick doesn't do that much for the Isles. Moulson wasn't exactly playing at his best either and although Isles fan liked him, he was still considered a liability defensively at times. Although Moulson would've most likely re-signed, he was still a ufa at the end of the year so the trade is pretty much a 1st round pick for an upgrade over Moulson. At least that's my opinion of the trade.

If the Islanders don't make the playoffs, they'll have sacrificed two picks for what...the negotiation's rights of Vanek?...That's clearly not a win for Snow...

Also, Snow has put a lot of pressure on his shoulders with this trade. If he wants to meet his expectations, he'll have to make more trades involving picks/prospects because there is no way the Islanders make the playoffs with their current roster.

Hopefully Bergevin doesn't fall into this trap. I don't want to see him give away picks and prospects for what ends up being another first round exit.

You have to look at it over long term. It will balance out. All clubs have injuries. Yes, we never had Elemin but we just got a break Islanders with no Vanek, Columbus without Gaborik.
