Buffalo/Chicago (no Kane or Miller)

Khabibulin has been a sieve and is now injured. Hawks could use a backup (especially is Raanta is not ready). Buffalo seems to be rebuilding.

Hawks send:

Morin, and a conditional 6th rounder (if Morin plays 40 games for the Sabres, it
becomes a 5th)

Sabres send:

Matt Hackett

Hawks get a quality backup who has family ties to Chicago, looked great as a stopgap backup while in Minnesota. Buffalo gets another pick and a sniper prospect that does not seem to have a spot in Chicago.

If we trade Hackett, we are dangerously thin at goalie and you limit what you can do in regards to moving Miller. That said, I would still contemplate the move because I would prefer Morin to Hackett.

All it means is they would need another goalie to play at the NHL level when Miller leaves. If say it was Halak and something for Miller at 50%, they get their NHL-level guy -- has no bearing on what they do with Miller. Netminders can be found to fill in.

I like the idea. Morin's someone who I've wondered about for a long time.

I'd do it from a Buffalo standpoint. Buffalo will likely go with Enroth as their goaltender next year anyways as he has 1 year remaining. Goaltenders aren't exactly hard to obtain and you generally don't know what you're getting in them until well into their 20s anyways.

Yes, he is. Pierre McGuire played with Jeremy's dad in college (Hobart). Jeremy grew up in Auburn, NY.

How's that for a little Monday morning trivia?

Shouldn't it be a 5th if Morin doesn't play 40 games, else a 6th?

I'd give Raanta a couple games just to see what he has.

But if it looks like he's not ready, I'd pull the trigger on this or any Morin to *team* for *decent backup*.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it that much. Well, unless you are worried about the Amerks depth in goal.

Right now, the Sabres have 6 pro goalies. Trading Hackett and Miller still gives them four for the rest of this season with Enroth & Lieuwen in Buffalo and then Makarov & Knapp in Rochester.

I could see picking up Halak (or say Hiller) if the other team needs to move a goalie in a Miller deal for cap purposes.

But, given that the Sabres aren't going anywhere this year, I wouldn't be worried about NHL goalie depth for the rest of this season.

And they can address the backup/co-#1 with Enroth during the offseason.

Hackett has regressed as a prospect and is not NHL ready at this time

Buffalo does not have any NHL ready depth after Hackett.

enroth hasnt proven himself yet as a starter. Next year i see them doing a 1A/1B to start the year with Hackett and enroth then decide who the #1 is.

If Miller was resigned then they would have to trade Enroth or Hackett because next year Hackett has to go through waivers.

Raanta is better than Hackett IMO, so not worth giving up Morin for him.

Was looking at a fallback if Raanta just is not ready. Here Is hoping Raanta is a pleasant surprise

to early and you are asking way to much for Morin.

In early February maybe this

to Buffalo Jeremy Morin

to Chicago Hackett & 5th rounder.

You got your teams crossed up on who owes who a 5th rounder in the deal.

5th rounders = serious business

I'd take Morin + Raanta + late pick over Hackett + Raanta

A lot of #2 goalies I'd rather have than Hackett. If Khabi is done and Raanta isn't ready, Bowman will aquire a veteran, probably with an expiring contract.

I doubt Buffalo trades Hackett, I figure he's their backup behind Enroth next year.

If I were the Hawks, I wouldn't be looking to Hackett to be my backup. Not that I don't think he could eventually be a good netminder, but the Hawks need stability there and Hackett has not proven himself yet. Way too risky.

Maybe. He's been so inconsistent this year. I think new management would be more inclined to sign a vet to add stability to the crease unless Hackett straightens that out. Especially since it's not like we know what we're getting if we commit to Enroth as a starter.
