We need Mason to sit in the stands staring at his glove for a few hours before a game.

The only qualm I have is the amount of rebounds he gives up, though he does seem to be able to direct them to the corner more than he does the slot.
Many of Mason's rebounds are off his waffle board ( blocker), i think he has the best blocker hand in the NHL, he uses it very effectively to direct the puck out toward the boards for our wingers to take it up ice.

Mason's pretty inconsistent with his glove, at times he can really flash some leather but other times he really struggles to get a hold of it. So far this year he hasn't really been burnt by it & usually does recover nicely when he doesn't fully get control of it.

In his 20 games as a Flyer so far Steve Mason has never given up more than 3 goals in a game.

What a great trade for homer, and what a turnaround for mason.

20 games is a good size...but a year's worth would really tell if he's changed. Still a lot to be seen.

So last night was interesting...

Mason saved Flyers ass a bunch of times....

Bob got smoked.....

I'm going to do this because I can...lol

Mason: 2.12 GAA, .932 SV%
Bob: 2.89 GAA, .907 SV%

Bob had a tremendous year and is a talented guy, right now this trade is heavily weighted to the Flyers side.

Steve has played great for us so far. Where have you gone Sergei Brobrovsky?

High risk..high reward. This one is working out for Holmgren.

Mason definitely always had more upside than Bob b/c of his size and athleticism. Attitude was the main question mark. Luckily he's had a reawakining in Philly "goalie hell."

Mason since coming to the Flyers:
Games: 22
GAA: 2.05
Save %: .936

Bob won the Vezina with these stats:
Games: 38
GAA: 2.00
Save %: .932

He's backed up that with a 2.88/.907 in 17 games this season.

That was sarcastic. .907 is brutal.

under 90% like Bryz played most of the time was Brutal but .907 is pretty pedestrian. He'll need to get back up to .920 at the least

With the new contract he's got to be at least be in the vicinity of .920. Columbus is pretty terrible right now but him & the team in front of him need to be better.

Don't quote me on this (as I cba doing the legwork to be 100%, goalie stats are a pain in the arse when you have to compile individual games, not hard, just time consuming!) but at a glance, since the start of april 2013 Rask is the only guy who has played more than 20 games in that span with obviously better numbers than Mason. (.936)

Rask is at .946 in that span I believe (.946 last april, .946 now... and probably around 1.72-1.74 GAA during that span off a quick guess from combined numbers.)

Bernier, (~.934) Reimer, (~.935) Harding (~.933) and Elliot (~.939) seem to be the only other guys in the .930 range during that span... and 2 of them have not played 20, and 1 played only 1 last year.

I may have missed someone as I only went through the obvious goalies and did quick mental maths on 2012-13 to see if they were possibly in that range. But even so, I highly doubt it is possible I left anyone out with significant games played and over .930 during that time... unless someone had a crazy .960 SV% in april 2013.

So over the last 30-35 NHL games (around avg played reg season since april 2013) and 3 months of play Mason has been a top 3 goalie in the league, with an argument being made he could be 2nd best in that span.

Mason wasn't traded for Bobrovsky, though....

Yeah..but I can understand equating the two. Obviously, until Stolarz comes to Philly and succeeds you can say the trade is not heavily weighted in the Flyers favor even with Bob coming back to earth a bit.

Valid, but since they are both #1s on their team and the players acquired from each aren't in the NHL, on the surface it feels like a Bob vs Mason deal.

Flyers fans are as eager to turn on Bobrovsky as Toronto fans are to turn on Luke Schenn.

I wish Bob all the luck, but at the same time I can't help myself from feeling a bit smug when his numbers keep going down. Not sure why and it's not something I really enjoy, haha.

Well right now seems Bob is handling Columbus' suckitude better than Mason who lost all confidence. Let's see if Bob has the mental fortitude many of us supporters think he has. If he becomes the next Nitty..then it will be ok to gloat but he's not even near that and Columbus still has potential as a team to get better especially with all the draft picks they stockpiled. I don't see an Edmonton situation with them...
