Ekman-Larsson OR Karlsson

season till now...

OEL - 22 years old - 21gp. 4g. 12a. 16pts. +12 12pims. 39hits.

Karlsson - 23 years old - 22gp. 7g. 15a. 22pts. -2 8pims. 21hits.

You are an NHL GM and you can only draft only 1 of them to help build your team around... who do you pick???

Love OEL, but Karlsson no doubt.

For the Habs, OEL no doubt. Pair him with Subban.

For the Sharks, it's a toss up at this point. Either would be awesome. I'm leaning towards Karlsson, because pair him with Vlasic... again

I'd much rather build my team around Karlsson.

Using +/- here is an excellent example of why it's completely useless.

Ekman-Larsson and it doesn't take me long to make the decision.

Would much rather have OEL, you can use him in every situation in all zones knowing full well he will excel in it. Karlsson on the other hand makes Dany Heatley look good in his own end. Karlsson's offense is great but not enough to make up for the difference in defense.

Whatever Karlsson doesn't give you, which is very little when he's playing well, you fill it out with other players on your roster. What Karlsson does give you is unmatched by any player. He's a one man transition machine and puck possession cyborg. You don't pass that up for any player. 6 points out of the Art Ross right now

I'll admit, I based my vote and original comment based on the eye test and opinion mostly. But afterwards, I decided to go check out the numbers to see who's been better so far this year (and only this year). Turns out both have been pretty meh to bad. But OEL has truly horrendous corsi and fenwick numbers which kind of shocked me. Karlsson's numbers are not good at all either (at least for supposed #1 Dman), but they're significantly better than OEL's. Did not realize that according to underlying numbers OEL is having an awful time so far this season. Could be that the west is just tougher going than the east but still...

So my apologies for a hasty judgement. I can fully admit when my eyes have been proven wrong

100% this. I like my #1's to be elite at everything.

Are you basing that on any evidence, what you think you see, or just what seems like it would make sense?

Not so far this year no, but once Karlsson gets going, yes, and by a good margin. Because he's underachieving defensively so far (understatement).

I don't think numbers are everything, but they certainly play a part.

Ekman Larsson plays against tougher competition, and has much lower offensive zone start %

I'm a biased Coyotes fan, but I think the way the questions is phrased ought to make people lean toward OEL. This is building a team around one of them. If I'm building a team from scratch, I'd personally want OEL. Karlsson is better offensively, and situationally. I think OEL is more useful in a variety of ways and situations. I prefer him as a "from scratch" kind of guy. I can see Karlsson winning more handily in a poll about adding one or the other to an existing team.

OEL. Would rather have a defenseman that can actually play defense

Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

He'd fit in quite nicely for the Leafs and he's a great Defenseman.

I should also mention that I would take OEL over any other defenceman in the league to start a team.

Karlsson would be my 2nd choice though, so it's not like it's a massive margin or anything like that.

This is not entirely true. According to the QualComp numbers, they play against approximately the same competition. However, OEL does start more of his shifts in the DZone.

Still... it's not enough to make up the difference. And other western Dmen have not suffered a noticeable dip vs. eastern Dmen.

OEL has a CF% (corsi For %) of 43.6% and a CF%rel of -5.8% meaning his team is actually that much worse when he's on the ice.

Karlsson has a CF% of 51.7% and a CF%rel of +4.1%

As I said, neither have great corsi numbers (both are outside of the top 50 for defensemen), but OEL's are worse.

Good question. I would likely take OEL since I have been high on him since pre-draft and he is hitting all my expectations (no, that does not happen often). I'll admit, I drool over having both him and Subban on the Habs blueline.
