Dion is better then fans outside of TO give him credit for (not as good as leafs fans make him sound mind you). With that said I wouldn't want Homer to offer the type of contract it would take to get him here. Plus if Hartnell is still around the two would end up causing a ruckus in the locker room.

And Luke...there were rumors that he didn't get along with Schenn.

I have no interest in Phaneuf because he's been really inconsistent whenever I watch him. I prefer a more steady option.

If Phaneuf reaches free agency, you know with 100% certainty that Homer will be going after him

Why wouldn't they if they had the money?

D costs for next year:

Coburn - 4.5
Streit - 5.25
Gross - 3.5
Luke - 3.6

Still a pretty pricey D, however if they added Phaneuf it would give them a really solid Top end D pairing.

Because you know Phaneuf would get 6-7

Yeah, not sure I'd want Phaneuf around. With having to resign Schenn and Mason at the end of this season, it might be too much.

Plus we already know how well he and Hartnell get along.

I do agree though that he's a bit underrated. He's prone to making some boneheaded plays, but he's still an effective player out there for the most part.

What's sad is that, even when dropping Timonen, our offseason D salary would still be something like 25 million. Which is still near or at the top for D expense.

Timonen + Mez = 10M off the books. Plus the fact that the cap might actually rise to 70M, Flyers gain at least 16M in space then...

Forgot about Mez. That actually brings us down to like 20-22 mil.

The good news is, that's just almost in the range for normal expenditure. The bad news is, it's not quite there and they're bound to throw a bag of cash at someone.

I hope the cap keeps skyrocketing, it'll help us balance what we spend on an average D with being able to afford forward depth. Sure, that'll lead to another lockout because the owners refuse to fix the problems on their end, but a rapidly rising cap benefits the Flyers in a big way.

BTW, Hypothetically if they were to sign Phaneuf, I'd pretty much guarantee L.Schenn isn't in Flyers orange next year.

It would only happen if Morin stole the spot from him... if you ask me.

Would be tough to fit Phaneuf's salary under the cap unless the Flyers dumped Mez and Timonen retires(which I think will happen) Phaneuf is a type of player that fits the Flyers style.
Answer to Hartnell conflict...trade Hartnell, which player is more valuable to the Flyers..Harts or Dion? Dion for sure unless Harts rebounds this year and has a 40pt season.

They're pros. Not sure I'm buying this. Even recently, some players who didn't get along when wearing opposing jerseys became Flyers.

Agreed. I think that spot would go to Alt, who is a much better skater.

However, if talking hypothetically would rather have Dan Girardi.

The Leafs can't afford to get rid of Phaneuf so I think you won't have to worry. Their defence is horrific.

I would love to see all the fervent Joe Toronto defenders of Phaneuf turn around and bash him endlessly if he left.

Yeah until Bettman gets greedy and allows an expansion in Seattle...expansion drafts thin out your depth.

Sure is but the Sharks are a good team that are willing to spend the money to bring him back. If they offer him a contract he'll return most assuredly. I realize they'll be looking to re-sign some RFAs as well as Thornton and Marleau but I'd think Boyle would be willing to take a bit of a pay cut to stay in San Jose.

EVERY time when JVR scores this deal comes to mind.
Awful deal.
Guy has no upside apart from being 5-6 dman for next 10 years, those guys grow in trees.
He had upside of Stevens wayback but maybe he was rushed too quick to the Show.
Now he is on downcline, not same player anymore.

Homer should look himself in mirror everyday and remember this deal.

Agree the only good thing about it is Leafs defense is extremely poor even if they are scoring alot. But who knows what minutes Luke would be getting there.
