The Flames are out hitting the Hawks 26 - 8.

A little tougher night than on Monday.

Sad state of affairs.
Is sarcasm really that hard to understand?

Nice choke job, Calgary.

Calgary puts up a half-decent performance, so of course there's guymez right on cue.

Poor coaching from Hartley tonight. He has Baertschi and Monahan on the ice with 20 seconds left in a tie game.

Baertschi ices the puck on a panic play. 18 year old Monahan is then stuck taking an important draw in his own end. Gets schooled, and game over.

Flames fans should be ripping on the coaching tonight on the call in show. I think I'll tune in ...

Relax sparky...it doesn't have to be that painful for you.

Just accept it...the Flames are a much tougher team to play against and they are only in year 1 of their rebuild.

It sucks but its true.

That was poor.

That said if Baertschi finishes on that glorious chance just over halfway through the 3rd this game is likely done.

Thankfully they choked but to their credit they did put up a hell of a fight.

Something I would really like to see from the Oilers on occasion.

How convenient for you whenever the topic of the flames comes up you get away with trolling us in our own forum because you're also an "oiler fan".

But is tougher = better?

Hits is just a stat.

According to this we outhit them 22-11 with Petry almost outhitting their entire team.

You know Detroit continues to get praise by the media for being such a smart team, but man do Weiss and Howard still look like horrid deals.

Really enjoyed the 3rd period of the Flames game last night. Flames fans can blame me. I tuned in for just a bit and Hawks started scoring as soon as started watching. lol.

Funny to see Baertschi flubbing a wide open net and all day to put it in that would have made it 3-0. Also funny to see him ice the puck to setup the winning Hawks goal with 18secs left.

Oh man, All that flames try and effort dismantled completely in 10mins.

The long faces said it all.

ps Reto Berra is awful. Holy crap bad. What could the Flames possibly see in this guy other than top 5 pick in the draft guaranteed...

Any reason Calgary keeps playing Reto Berra over Kari Ramo? By all standards (other than a Ranfordian spectacular save of the year candidate), Ramo seems to be the better goaltender. Berra's kind of awful.

Perhaps some clarification...

I saw numerous opportunities for Oiler players to finish a check against the Hawks top line and they just skated on by (Hall and Eberle did that and do that consistently).
Being tough and hitting is only part of being tougher to play against. Making life miserable for the other team (finishing checks...being tough on the puck) is an element the Oilers lack in spades...the Flames are the opposite.

The system matters along with the players commitment and execution of the system.
Having a balanced roster with size and playing ability also helps a great deal.

Elements that the Oilers org has failed at consistently over the last 7 years.

We shall see if the Flames are able to overcome their injuries with their strong systems play.

Wideman being out is a big blow. He is their best dman and would be the best dman on the Oilers as well.

Monahan is a great young player (2nd in NHL rookie scoring...big strong responsible player) and he is out as well.

That should help the Oilers surpass them in the standings.

They're both pretty bad. One good game by Berra has been followed by many bad or mediocre ones.

Kipper really masked the underlying problems of the flames as well.

The standings are still pretty funny (or just sad if you're an Oilers fan).

Boston is the only team in the east who would currently have a playoff spot in the western conference. And they'd be in 7th or 8th.

The Oilers looked pretty good grinding it out tonight. Maybe they aren't as far off from adding that to their game as you think.

8 teams in the West have as many or more pts than Boston. So sad. Plus you know the Bruins get a lot easier pickings on the schedule and far less travel.

Oilers would be 3 games out of a playoff spot in the pathetic EC. The standings in the East are even worse considering the only times a lot of those putrid clubs put a win up is against equally awful clubs.

The East is so bad they make Toronto Maple Leafs look like they are a decent team.

They did indeed look good...it was nice to see. A few issues but for the most part it was a solid road game.
Thats exactly the type of game this team needs to play game in and game out.
So hopefully this isnt an aberration. I need a little more evidence before I proclaim the team as officially turned around though.

I still think there are roster issues that MacT needs to address.

Then again...maybe they are.

Not enough players on this team want to win bad enough to be consistently tough to play against.

That really shouldn't surprise anyone though.

The Rangers are dismantling the Canucks this afternoon and the Rangers have their backup in. 4-0 with about 8 minutes to go in the second. The Canucks seem to have quit playing for Torts already. I think their fall from grace is going to have a pretty hard landing.

P.S.-I'm not watching it, just listening to the NYR radio broadcast as it's my weekend to work.
